Hello everyone , I recently acquired a pair of swift parrots(part of the lorikeets family) and plan on breeding them I immediately fell in love with there colours . I plan to handrear the babies but first I am trying to find out how tame I can expect to get from that does anyone here have them or ever tried hand rearing these bird's? I have spent hours online looking for info on these bird's handrear and came across very little information due to them being extremely rare and classified as endangered species in there native country of Australia and Tasmania. . . I am in Ireland where very few people have them here either . . . Any info on above would be very much appreciated . Sorry if I haven't put this post in the proper place on forum admin feel free to move it to where it should be . Thank you

Do you have any previous experience with breeding or owning parrots?

If possible, I would try to get in touch with a local parrot breeder, even if they are not experienced with this species in particular. Having a mentor makes a huge difference for learning skills, like hand-feeding, as well as teaching you things that you would never even think to ask about until too late.

Another thing to look into right away, if you don't already have one, is a good avian vet. You will want to get both of your birds checked to confirm that they are in good health and fit to breed.

Yes I have and I currently hand rear all my birds mostly kakariki parakeets and cockatiels . Both the swifts parrots are in good health otherwise I wouldn't be breeding them ,They were checked over by a vet albeit not an avian vet as there's only one in my whole country that specialises in parrots and exotic animals and that vet is 3 hours away from me . I just need to speak to someone who has attempted hand rearing them to find out what the outcome was like do they tame down etc .
Thanks

With regards the breeder I bought them from doesn't know much about them as he got them in from another country along with a huge number of birds so he doesn't actually breed swifts himself .

I really have no helpful information but just wanted to say wow! They are one of my favourite little native birds. Not very many left in the wild at all sadly, they have very specific nesting and feeding habits is about all I know.

Yes it's extremely difficult to find much info on them , I do know they are part of the lorikeets family eats simular foods as them . They nest in tree hollows so use same size nest box or simular as rainbows . They don't like to breed in very hot climate(which I don't think I have to worry about living in Ireland) I am really anxious to know if they tame down if I am successful in breeding them and hand rearing . I haven't seen any videos on YouTube or anywhere of them being handreared .

As they’re not an overly common pet or aviary bird here in Aus I would guess they don’t. Most of our native birds that are “easy to tame” are the ones you commonly see as pets or aviary birds here.

I wish I could help, but I don't know much about lorikeets. Those are beautiful birds. Hopefully someone here will know something about them.

Good luck!
