My sister found her duck under the chicken coop when she went to put them up. (she was outside in the yard all day). The last time she saw her was at 6PM and she was fine, she went to put her up at about 8PM. She has severe facial swelling and a watery discharge from her eyes, and noisy breathing. She has not gotten any worse in the last hour. We have no vets in this area that will see exotics at this hour. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Could she have gotten stuck under there or been attacked by a predictor, Victoria? There's no blood? :hug5:

Did you examine for a tiny sting point anywhere on the face? A raised dot with swelling/redness? Any snakes in your area or poisonous spiders?

the left side of her face seems to be slightly more swollen than the right side. Is there anything we can do if it's a poisonous spider/snake?

It could be New Castle disease and it doesnt sound like there is really any treatment for it PS47/PS044: Common Poultry Diseases

Make sure you wash good before going near your parrots just in case

were thinking it may be a bug bite, is there anything that can help with her swelling?

The only info I found was for dogs. It recommended putting ice on the swelling to slow down the spread of the poison after looking for a possible stinger still embedded in the skin. I don't know if that is best in this case, Victoria, since you're not sure it was a bite.

Ok, thanks Marie, we can't see her skin because of all the feathering on her face.. I'll suggest that to my sister. Right now, were just going to keep her inside for a while, check on her and hope that she's Ok. The fact that she's not getting/gotten any worse is a good sign.

Keep her hydrated and away from your birds. I'm sorry I couldn't find anymore info.

Good Morning,

What we use here for our birds: make a paste from powdered slippery elm powder and apply to the bite area. Hydration is important. We also use children's benadryl liquid, (1/2 capful to pint of water).
