Starling Advice Needed

I'm new to this website. I kind of only joined because I need some advice, and so far this website has been extremely helpful compared to any other platforms I've looked up.

I recently adopted a Starling (by recently, I mean a few weeks ago) and it's been relatively easy to care for him. I live in South Africa, so it's not the typical European Starlings that people usually post about. He's a red-winged Starling. He's actually a real cutie pie. Pecks my moles, bites my toes and knocks my stuff over, but super lovable and likes to cuddle at night when he sleeps. He's got a lot in common with what I've read about European Starlings, in that he absolutely LOVES water, likes to pick fabric apart and poo's almost a disturbing amount.

Anyways, he was still a baby when I got him, but had already started growing his adult feathers. I started him off on ground up high-protein cat food, making it like a porridge for him. Within two weeks he's fledged (if that's the right word, I'm not sure) and so came the question: What to feed him next?

My neighbour told me to order dried meal worms, and through some research online I found out that red-winged Starlings eat insects, fruit and seeds. So I've been feeding him the meal worms, slices of apple, and the even a wild bird seed mix. He devours the apples like crazy, eats the meal worms with some encouragement, and doesn't touch the seeds at all. But he's constantly making noise and telling me to feed him, even though I give him a full apple a day along with 2 hand sized tupperware bowls of meal worms. Even more sometimes, since he harasses me for food and clings to me otherwise.

I'm just wondering how much I should actually be feeding him, because Google told me that Starlings can eat up to 2kg a day, which sounds a bit questionable, since my bag of mealworms is 500g. I'd also appreciate any other Starling advice, maybe things he'd enjoy, things to keep in mind or ways I could improve his diet.

Well, I'm not entirely sure how to update this, but I'm guessing this is the way?

Anyways, I released Steve with a heavy heart, but he's definitely a much happier birdy now that he's been set free and can go join the other starlings around our neighbourhood.

I had to answer my own questions through trial and error/experience over time.

It took him a while to stop harassing me the whole time for food, but once he realised that I'm not directly feeding him anymore, he relaxed a bit (though it didn't stop him from nibbling on my ears, lips, fingers, nose, toes etc.), and I just topped up his food bowl (a hand-sized container) once a day or so.

He really enjoyed shiny things, often carrying my jewelry off with him and tossing it around my room. He also loved slices of peeled apple (he could eat a whole apple in a day) and squashed grapes, which I gave to him as a snack/treat every 2 days about. But his primary diet consisted of dried mealworms (sometimes I'd also feed him random bugs I'd find during my day to day activities). If you're wondering whether you can feed him a certain bug or not, best way to find out is to just feed it to them. Usually they won't eat it if it's harmful to them, as far as I saw and understand. I even fed mine stink bugs, though his breath would smell awful for a while afterwards.

Also, as I mentioned before, he LOVED water. I put him in the bathroom sink and let him splash about under a running tap usually twice a day. He also preferred a clean water bowl and would often opt to drink from the tap instead, since he'd mess a lot of his food in the water while he was munching away at bug chips, and I have a dove as well that also messed in there a lot, despite how often I cleaned it out.

Sorry for rambling, but hopefully this helps a little for whoever maybe has one of these cuties and is looking for some answers like I was. God bless.

It was very nice of you to post an update here - you never know if someone in the future will be searching the internet and find your post! Sounds like he is a species that lives in the wild in the area, so it sounds like you did the right thing.

If you find yourself with more birdie friends in the future don't hesitate to come back and post
