Do you mean Stainless Steel? Louise had one some time ago, it rusted because it was not the grade of SS advertised. Vendor sent a replacement cage that did not rust. I ended up going back to powder coated because it was easier to clean. At that time (a few years back), there wasn't an AA vendor.

That may be a function of quality as well, if the stainless actually rusts it gets very pitted. I have both a stainless and a powder coated from the same vendor, and I find the stainless much more easily cleaned.

I was lucky enough to find a used Stainless steel cage. It was in decent condition but I have to keep on top of it to keep the rust away. It's a few spots that where it shows it's age (I've had it for 11 years now). I definitely find it easier to clean than powdered coated cages. But I haven't had the best luck with those.

I can't recall any vendors here that sold stainless steel cages. Maybe you're confusing them with @Wingdow who I believe sells stainless stands

What vendor did you use for the stainless cage

Was that to me? I bought a low end but brand name, Prevue. There are a lot of much (MUCH) more expensive and probably better made ones, but I have been pleasantly surprised how well made this was. It's less than a year old, so not certain the finish will hold up, but the welds and screw-joints and hinges and such are very nice.

They have a few in different sizes. This was the biggest I could get through doorways assembled. In this case I was not looking for a play top, this one is a "bigger home while I'm out of town" one for her to stay in a few days (someone does check on her), not climb around on.

I just don't trust powder coat -- it's terrific until it isn't and starts flaking, which might be in decades, or months, depending on the quality. At least with stainless you get rust -- with powder coat you get flakes of paint containing who knows what to ingest.

If the cage is T-300 type SS it will not rust. You can check with a magnet, it should not stick if it is a good cage.

The best stainless steel I can recommend is one made by Villa Filou. They are based in the Netherlands and don’t use toxic chemicals to remove the rest product of welding their cages.
They offer both 304 and (higher grade) 316 stainless steel.
I’ve had my cage for almost 15 years now and it’s so easy to clean because the doors are large and run from bottom to top.

LOL Yes the birdies and their ‘mansion’ take up quite some space.

Browsing this forum, I have seen quite some people with dedicated bird rooms, which seems like a dream for us! We live in the city, and we just have to give up a large part of our living room for our feathered friends.

Yes but... lots of things are non-magnetic including polished aluminum or ones chrome coated. And there are several varieties of pretty rust resistant stainless steel that are magnetic. A LOT of kitchen stainless is attracted to magnets (indeed must be to work with induction), though in some that's from different types of layers not innate throughout.

I wish it was that simple to tell good stainless from bad. Some manufacturers will tell you the stainless type (if they tell the truth, as so very many do not especially cheap imports). I could not find the type of stainless used by prevue for example, and I'm not knowledgeable enough about metals to tell (a magnet does not stick to it however). I bought it from Chewy who says it is 201 stainless (why would they say but not the manufacturer? Did they make it up, or are they right?). 201 is not as good as 304 but is a lot cheaper so it might be. 201 is not bad, just not as good as others.

I think the best bet to knowing its quality stainless is to buy from a brand with a reputation on the line, and be suspicious of the alphabet soup of brands coming out of china on Amazon (etc).

I think also how much it's worth spending for quality depends on the use case. A cage frequently outdoors near a chlorine pool or near an ocean with salt spray is very different from an occasional use cage inside in climate controlled space - and all that space in between those extremes.

And remember the correct wording of the old saying: "You do not get what you do not pay for"

Chrome is not but the steel it is plated onto is. And I can't think of anyone chrome plating SS. And while you can chrome aluminum It cost a lot to do so and polished ALU has a softer shine to it. Plus it cost as much as SS to fab with. I worked in metal fabrication most of my life.

Sorry, bad examples. My real point is that being non-magnetic does not mean T-30x necessarily (indeed my T-201, if that's what it is, is non-magnetic and is a poorer quality stainless). I don't know how to tell quality myself, I just think it's not quite as simple as using a magnet.

Sadly most of us find out when our shiny silver stainless starts looking a bit red or brown. :(
