I have found parrots and company, they are located in Stamford CT. Not to far away from me. They sell lovebirds DNA is done and the sample is sent to a reputable lab to see if the lovebird is male or female. When the pet bird is picked out before it gets DNA how do they know if it is male or female? As I have said I want a normal green male peachfaced lovebird? Can you please refer me to a bird speciality store that is reputable?

From what I've heard, they are very reputable and take excellent care of their birds. Since they are close I would recommend stopping in and looking around to see what they offer.
Lovebirds are a species that do not exhibit sexual dimorphism. You cannot tell the gender until you test for it or until it is older and you start to better understand bird hormones. I cannot think of any bird store that would be willing to DNA test before you buy the bird.
If owning a male is that important to you I would urge you to adopt one that has been previously sexed as opposed to buying one and doing it after and finding out that she is a female.

I haven’t been to Parrots & Company myself, but I’ve had them recommended to me by someone else as being a nice place.

I’ve also had good experiences at the Parrot and Bird Emporium in Agawam, MA. It’s a small place, but they seem to take good care of the birds there.

I don’t think there’s any way to tell a lovebird’s sex before DNA testing unfortunately.

Good luck in your search!

Maybe they’ll allow prior to purchase dna testing if you offer to pay for the testing at a loss for you if the bird is not your preferred sex and you don’t take that particular one home? You could ask.

They don’t know what sex the bird is before DNA testing- they may have a guess or an idea but that is all it is... a guess.

Thank you for your response. How long does the DNA test take two weeks? I know that it is hard to tell whether male or female with lovebirds. Yeah I am willing to pay but if the DNA results come back as female?

Not sure exactly how long it takes as I’ve never done DNA testing for my bird; but if it’s financially feasible, I’ve heard of people paying to DNA test the whole clutch before buying so that they know which ones are male or female.
