Hey! People bring me miscellaneous birds in the spring, and it is that time!! Most of the time they are fledglings or native species so I am able to take them to a rehabber. anywho, i’ll get started.

2 days ago, I was walking along outside and I stumbled along a STINKY ripped apart nest with dead chicks in it, and then I saw a mouth open not far from it. It was an eyes closed, no fuzz nestling. I picked him(?) up and I took him inside. I started my incubator and I searched EVERYWHERE for the feeding formula. I found it.
I will attach chick pics here. he still had some yolk sac visible so i was assuming 2 days old. I went ahead and fed him, but minimally. i fed him .2ml every 1.5 hours that day but now im not sure how much to feed… and like all the stuff.

I had one that I fed from about a week old until he was a fledgling and then gave him to a local rehabber who was willing to rehabilitate him. I live in the FL panhandle so unfortunately most of our rehabber are full rn + it’s not a native species so only about 2 within 3 hours of me will take him and they are full.

What I’m feeding:
Kaytee Exact Handfeeding Formula

Type of bird:
Assumed house finch or sparrow

Age:
as of 3/31/2026 (assumed) 3-4 days

bird: IMG_0646.jpeg

I ordered a kitchen scale so i can start weighing him.. He is very active and alert. i can hear him chirping from my living room which is what makes me think he’s not being fed enough. He doesn’t chirp past midnight. The first night i fed at 3 am but he didn’t want to wake up for it so im not sure that’s necessary.. also he has stopped pooping each time i feed him so im not sure he’s processing correctly. I just need a bit of help lol. any tips are appreciated!

You can check out this information about baby sparrows. They generally sleep through the night so you don't have to feed through the night like you would with a baby parrot.
Good luck.

We raised a female baby house finch a little older than that. We just got baby parrot formula and she thrived on it and she basically weened herself as she was ready. She just slowly started eating the finch seeds and eventually didn't need any feedings. She would start cheaping every three hours or so and pretty quickly started sleeping all night. She imprinted on us so she stayed with us and was very happy, playing with her toys and singing the songs of her people.

Seeing your photos remind me of my little sparrow, Spee, when I found him. If this little one does imprint on you then you will most probably need to keep him. IMO, they make wonderful feathered friends/family members.
