Prudence is currently Molting the feathers on her wings....mostly the clipped ones it appears (Yay!) She now has many of her flight feathers back, and she is already making tiny attempts to fly.

My question is:
Is it normal for her to sleep a little more frequently while she is Molting? I dont remember there being a differencce in her sleep pattern while she was in her baby molt.
But this time around, Im noticing she is taking frequent, short naps at time she wouldnt normally have been sleeping at. Otherwise, she is eating normally, hasnt lost any weight, is active and pleasant when awake......

What do you think?

Making feathers is a big event, just like egg laying. Trying to fly is also a workout if prudence hasn't flown before. She'd be soft.

Over the 30 years I've had birds, I've read plenty about molting using up energy, leaving birds grumpy, tired etc. But it has never happened to any of my birds for some reason. I think the grumpiness that some people experience comes from the companion not being aware and sensitive to the new pin feathers. But as for sleeping or napping more - I've never noticed that. All 3 of the budgie boys are molting right now, and it looks like a feather pillow exploded in the bird room. They are full of energy and having non-stop relay races.

Our tiel is a MISERABLE molter. She sleeps, won't interact and is plain old cranky. As a matter of fact, she sleeps tons. We always think she is sick and then remind ourselves she is molting.

A little extra sleeping is not abnormal Kim but as you know birds hide any illness very well so keep an eye on her and take her to the doc if your gut tells you to.

I will keep an eye on her, but Im happy to hear it can be a common side affect of Moliting. Thank You!
