Buddy tells me w/ body language & noises but his is arthritis. Too many years of not flying. At this point its when it's cold. Vet says let it go for now, until its more severe. Don't force flying when I'm aware he feels crummy, there's always the next day!
With Chirp, some of the things that tipped me off were a loss of appetite, more frequent naps, and not making noise. After the vet got him some Celebrex (vet says Metacam is too much for his liver to handle) he was feeling so much better.
When I got Buddy he either had Salmonella or something else but the 1st vet was pretty convinced it was the 1st. I could've possible given to him using a sponge which are now banned in my kitchen.
Buddy was napping frequently & as a bit of time went on was sort of biting @ the air. He also wasn't very active now that I think back...
