Hello my bird Kiwi has AGY and was given Amphotercin B she’s about to be on it for 5 days now! But she still regurgitates her food and eats it back up. She sits all day and sleeps. However she is drinking SOOO much water and eating a lot. She occasionally plays but goes back to sleeping. I’m terrified to lose her. Vet said she isn’t at that stage where it’s fatal.. how long does it take the medicine to take effect? I’m so scared to lose my cockatiel I’ve been worried

I would contact your vet and ask him how soon you should see improvement. I hope everything will be okay. You might also want to ask the vet if you should give probiotics also.

How old is she? Do you have any other vets around your area that are either avian certified or that are extremely knowledgeable with birds for a second opinion? I would speak with your vet and let her know your concerns first but if you feel they aren't doing everything they could do I would reach out to another vet even if I had to travel. You could call around at ER vets and ask who they recommend. The main issue I've noticed with my Amazon is that there aren't many vets out there that seem extremely knowledgeable about birds. Not saying your vet isn't knowledge but I would let her know your concerns. I would never trust the vet I take my dogs to (who I love dearly) for my bird. In fact, when I first got Sunny (my Amazon) I took her there because they said they take birds. They didn't weigh her and the vet looked extremely uncomfortable like he didn't know what he was doing. He listened to her with a stethoscope and told me "birds don't really need to be seen by a vet unless something is wrong". Red flags. The same vet is great with dogs... Just not birds. A different vet I took her to that advertised they see birds weighed her in Oz instead of grams. Now, I thankfully have a vet that is knowledgeable about birds and an avian certified vet several hours away if needed. Hoping your baby heals quickly! I know that scary feeling (hugs).

Hello! She’s 9 months and we have an avian vet pretty far from us! But after a few days she seems a little better today! Still worried tho…

Sorry I replied to a certain part but Kiwi is 9 Months old. I have to drive and hour and 30 mins from where I live and they specialize in birds only!! Kiwi seems okay but still sleeping, she is being a little more active than before for sure! She is still regurgitating her food and She does eat it back up tho. sHe is still puffed up tho and sits there alone. Doctor did say it should work within 3 days to a week, today should be a week that she has been on the medication. I will say she seems a little better. I have been a wreck and still on edge feeling like she wont make it and will lose her.

:hug8: sounds like you are at the right vet. Now, we just need Kiwi to get better! Keep us updated ❤ Big hugs. I know that worry. I'm dealing with pneumonia with Sunny (my red lored amazon). She's on her second round of antibiotics but so far is doing good.

I hope she gets better soon.. It really is scary just cuz birds tend to hide their symptoms and not much can be done.. But all I am doing is trying to be optimistic and hope the medicine works soon enough.. I hope Sunny feels better too!! Lots of love to you and your birdo

Ampho was really rough on my budgies. It helped a lot to keep them warm. I placed a heating pad over one corner of the cage with a towel draped over to create one warm spot for them to go to. If your cage is quite large, you can try having Kiwi in a smaller cage with the heating pad over the whole top of the cage and cover 1-2 sides with a towel to help hold in more heat. I kept the pad on a low setting. Hope Kiwi pulls through soon. :hug1:

Yeees I actually bought like a board and have a heating pad with an avian sun lamp for her! She is in a large cage and she would sit there until she got warm and then she would move away! I notice that at night she is more active for sure but feels a little better! Vet also gave her this medicine for pain in case she does have pain and feel like that has also helped her. Doctor did say that Ampho can be rough on cockatiels so to be sure she gave her this pain medicine. I hope she makes it through it. I would like to also add that her droppings are pretty normal now. Before they were very green and almost watery.
