Hello,
This is my first time posting on the forums and i was referred to these forums from a friend. I am having a bit of an issue with my female canary. I unfortunately will not be able to get her to the vet for a couple days so any info for the time being would be greatly appreciated. Here is my problem my female canary seems very clumsy lately like shes lost balance and shes sitting puffed out and she has lost some feathers around her right eye (best way to describe it is her eye looks like a fischer love birds eye) I give her fresh greens daily (Kale, carrots, brocholli, and a diced apple all organic of course) I also keep millet and seed in her cage for her. She gets a powdered multi vitamin supplement every time she gets new seed. I am not sure if this is a vitamin deficiency or an illness. If anyone has had any experience with this situation any information would be greatly appreciated. Lou

My advice would be to get her to an Avian vet ASAP. It sounds very serious. If you have to wait the most important thing you can do is get her into a hospital cage. She needs heat and hydration. You can tent a smaller cage on 3 sides and the top and then put a heating pad set on low under one half or shine a heat lamp on the tent (not the bird) from about 2-3 feet away. Then next thing you need is some clear pedylite to mix with her water 50/50. Also put her food, water, perches down low so she doesn't have to spend the energy to get up there to eat and drink.

Do you need help finding a vet?

THanks Ginger for your advice! I hope your baby will be ok. Keep warm and calm until you can get to a vet.

Lou Ginger has given you some good advice to try and keep him stable but he really needs a vet so please get him there as soon as you can. Birds decline so quickly. Please let us know how it goes.

yes keep her warm and in a separate cage by herself..move everything to the bottom, perches etc so she has access..it almost sounds like egg binding..

Could those missing feathers come from a trauma to the head such as flying into something head first?

It sounds like it may be a head injury. Is there any swelling or redness in that area?
