Just came home today a 2-3 weeks supply of almonds in shell. I really do not like to purchase too much in advance.

I had run out so they've been eating the regular nuts with no shell.

They really love nuts that come in shell and were so happy when they saw the bag! I think they enjoy the process of working for their food much better.:D

Michael is also a lazy bird. He would rather go without any nuts than crack the shells.

Boy, for a BTM...that's pretty darn lazy! LOL! I just gave Reggie a walnut and he worked at it for a little bit but then bee-lined it to the bag of almonds I had. When I put those away, he went back to the walnut for a bit and then decided it was more fun to sit on me than bother extracting nuts out of shells...

Emmett really doesn't go for shelled or un-shelled nuts, however, when he's in the mood for an almond he likes to work for it in the shell. Olivia loves them either way, however, rather enjoys working for her almonds, pistachios, and pine nuts. I sort of crack hazelnuts, because they are too round and slippery for her to get a good grip on. Walnuts are too large for her dainty feet, however, she'll work at a half shelled walnut. I agree with you Saemma, they relish the food they work for. :)

I know. He has gone six days with no nuts because he would not crack them. I caved after that.

When I give Kiwi almonds in the shell, he plays with them for days before finally cracking it open and eating it. As a result, I offer both shelled and unshelled

Emma used to toss them to the ground and wait for me to crack them. I put up with this for several months. Then I partially cracked them for her to make it easier. Today I no longer need to do that. She really LOVES cracking her almond shells. It's great beak exercise.:D

None of mine will eat any nuts in the shell except pistachios. Even Sammy with his big U2 beak won't crack them.

Makes me wonder if maybe they were never offered shelled nuts before?

My pyrrhura conures can't really crack nut shells well, other than peanuts which they love but I do not feel safe feeding in-shell. But almonds, walnuts, pecans, pine nuts and brazil nuts are well loved by them if I offer them small pieces of the nuts.

My alexandrine hasn't figured out yet that nuts in any form are edible, he just thinks they are for tossing out of his dish

shelled(half cracked) pistachios are a favorite here :) they do like the in shell almonds, but it is time consuming so i am constantly finding half open almonds still in need of eating!! They all like shelled(half a walnut, good forager for these littles) walnut.

My greenwing loves nuts in the shell, the rest not so much. My grey tosses the edible part and will just play with the shell. She doesn't eat nuts anyway. The other two can't be bothered to mess with shells. I find it interesting that my too will chew through a 2x4 in a day and yet is too lazy to crack open even an almond shell.

It depends really on the day – sometimes they are lazy, other days they will happily be up for the ‘challenge’ of cracking it open. I say challenge because, for a few of them, it takes them a bit before they finally crack it open.

Lola goes crazy for ANY in shell nut. The most challenging for her is an in shell pecan. It's so funny-- she will work incredibly hard to get it open despite how big and slippery they are... but she doesn't even really like pecans!!! She just likes the challenge :D

My cockies like almonds anyway they come...I like giving them almonds in the shell as it gives them beakasize...and keeps them busy when I'm at work. I also hide them around the cage to encourage foraging.
