I have had my couple of diamond doves for many years and they haven’t laid any eggs in a long time - maybe a year or so. The male is constantly trying to mate and he kind of beats up on the female. One of her eyes is often closed, likely from him pecking it. My question is: can these birds live happily and healthily alone or is it always better for them to be mated? I am contemplating re-homing the male bird but don’t want to cause them any strife. I suspect the female is quite a bit older since she’s not laying anymore and would just like for her to be at more peace and not constantly being harassed and hurt by the male.

While they do do better in pairs, they can live singly. In my opinion, it is much better to protect her physical health by separating them than to leave them together.
