Good morning. I provide my 4 y/o Crested Gloucester canary with daily mixed seed, pellets, veggies and fruits. All of which he eats as he likes. My question is regarding the seed. As far as I can tell he eats only certain seeds from the mix and the rest is wasted. Should I be determining what he likes and then giving him a mix of those selected seeds?

I’d stick with the variety. Even if he’s picky, it's good to offer a range so he gets different nutrients. Plus, it keeps things interesting for him. You could try limiting the seed mix a bit if you notice a lot of waste, but definitely keep the variety.

My 4 yr old canary eats VERY few seeds of the many brands I have tried. He is fed fresh romaine or a dark green everyday, apples, dried mealworms, occasionally hemp hearts, chopped raw sunflower seeds and or cooked eggs. I bought a bag of just safflower seeds as he seemed to eat them on occasion but I know they are high in fats. I waste so much seed it’s costing a bunch. (I give the uneaten seeds to the person I get my eggs from so at least they aren’t tossed).

Any suggestions of a seed brand I should Use? And no - he won’t eat pellets.

Canaries main seed is - naturally enough - canary seed, but they also need a mix of milletts, and if you want your boy to whistle his little head off at the correct time of year.
Canola/rape seed is the perfect aphrodisiac that will get him singing. Being a form of finch, they also need greens. Idealy green seeding grasses. Fruit is not natural to them, but some like apple.
Only replace his seed when it is down to 1 or 2 types. Canaries are generally an easy bird to feed as they are so curious they will try almost anything. So caution is needed, because this will include what is not good for them, or only good for them in small quantities, like too much fatty seeds. (in this canaries are like some people, no healthy boundaries) Hemp, sunflower and safflower are good, but in tiny quantities or he will get fat and die of fatty liver disease, and that would not be good for him or you.

You might want to post your own thread love, so that your question doesn't go unanswered.
