Looking for recommendations for seed mixes, and what to look for in a seed mix.
  • For budgies
  • Please before suggesting make sure it’s available in Australia
  • Don’t want one with added stuff such as sunflower seeds, fruits, and grit
  • Available online, as I am avoiding stores right now
  • And if possible bags/boxes of at least 2kg
And while I continue to search myself what should I be looking for in a seed mix?

I used to use Trill, but its freshness isn’t great.

Even in the US I am trying to think if there are any with those parameters!

I doubt this is available in Australia, or at least not without prohibitive shipping costs, but I did find one seed blend that's just the seeds. My birds liked it, but I don't recall it being their favorite of the seed blends we've tried.

Well I know of TOPS Napoleon mix but that's only about 0.5kg bags and I'm not sure how easy it is to find in Australia

This thread is a little funny for me because I'd actually been looking to see if there were any Australian seed mixes available that were at least partially based on native grass and other seeds. I thought it'd be fun to tell my littles, "this is what your ancestors used to eat."

And they'd probably turn up their beaks and ask, "yeah, great. Where's the millet?"

Anyway, I did find this on an Australian website. 20 Kg would probably be a lifetime supply for my birds, but at least it might be a starting place.

You could freeze it. That’s what we do.

some people buy the individual seed types at the health food store and mix their own

Didn’t realise I was so picky till I was typing it out :o:
Aren’t finch mixes mainly just seeds, how suitable are they for budgies?

If I can’t find something I will stick with the brand I usually use and do this, as I can only seem to find it online in 20kg bags.

I don’t know if I have the brain power for that :sour:

I start with a base budgie seed and add to it. I usually add a few types of quinoa, hulled sunflower or safflower, tiny chopped nuts and some raw oats and whatever I see at the local health food store that is safe for them. Thats on tops of chop, cooked grains and sprouts.

Can’t seem to find it here, and as @Mizzely said it comes in quiet small bags.
