This morning, my adopted African Grey parrot Scooter passed away unexpectedly. Until this morning she hadn't been ill and was fine yesterday. This morning she was lethargic and was moving her head from side to side and shivering. After a while she weakened and fell to the bottom grate. She attempted to climb back up but struggled to do so. On her last try she flopped onto her side and stopped breathing and she was gone.
As soon as I saw that Scooter wasn't right I quickly tried to get in touch with a veterinarian, but today was the Labor Day holiday in the U.S. and most vets' offices were closed, including the one I normally use for the parrots and another I used once in an emergency. There is an emergency vet in the area but they no longer treat birds at all. I finally got ahold of one office which was going to have their vet with avian experience call me to make some kind of arrangements; he wasn't in at the time. Sadly the call came too late. The vet did ask about Scooter's symptoms and behavior and he thought it may have been a stroke or a seizure.
Ralph the QP was quite upset and watched over Scooter until she passed. He was rather subdued for a while but eventually was more like his usual self. I moved Scooter's empty cage out of the room and Ralph keeps looking over toward where it was. He must miss our funny grey friend as much as I do. It's sad and strange without Scooter here.
My plan is to bury Scooter in my brother's back yard next to George, my old YCA who passed away in 2010.
Whenever my microwave oven beeps I'll think of Scooter. That was her favorite sound to imitate.
