We live in a pretty small flat, so Patchy's sleeping cage is in my closet (its a small walk-in) so when we put him to bed we can still watch tv in the living room withour disturbing him. I realized I forgot to close the door to the closet today after putting him to sleep (about an hour after).. when I finally shut the door I think it scared him because I could hear him fall and hit the bars on the side.. (we have padding on the bottom). 6 feathers came out.. 3 big, 3 small. I quickly ran in and got him out and started apologizing and then cuddled with him a bit. Have any of you had this happen? Feel like the worst parront :( I think I scared the feathers off of him.

I know!! Do yours have a dedicated quiet room? I'm trying to think how to avoid this in the future. I'm just going to have a reminder on my phone or something. Poor little guy

Ahww poor Patches. Sadly it happens, I understand you feel bad though. Does he go in hus sleeping cage and not get put to bed right away? My birds that have a sleeping cage or room, I put to bed and cover/close door. Maybe you can look into a small night light? Or if you leave him in his night cage with door open for a bit to acclimatise, instead a light on timer that fades out so you can close the door right away?

I have woken Jona once, he sleeps in a room loose on perches on the ceiling, amd found a blood feather. He had had a scare some time during the night, and I hadn't noticed. So glad he was allright and it had stopped bleeding. Is Patches prone to scares? Or maybe this night routine is still new? I haven't had a lot of issues with birds scaring at night, and I often walk into the room my small birds sleep loose in. When I get home after bed time I simply need to see them for a bit, see if they are allright  I do use a small light when checking on them, the flashlight on my phone but cover it with my hand so it is not too bright.

They have they own room but like @TikiMyn ive gone in after dark if I’ve had to change water/food late I normally whistle before opening door so they know it’s me but I’ve forgotten a few times and they fly around

if hubby goes in there topless they go nuts in cage because of his tattoos he has his work clothes in cupboard

The best thing to do in my opinion is to get him used to noises at night. Of you need to close the door again, quietly say his name so that he knows its you. Dead silence isnt the way to go if you me. If he can faintly hear your tv in the next room , theres nothing wrong with that. They can easily sleep with noise in the background. Actually youre better off having a radio on quietly during the night just so that its not dead silent. Cockatiels are notorious for night frights and i have 6 of them. Theyre all very used to common noises in the house at night but night frights still happen occasionally from no apparent reason.
