I am new to the world of budgies and am panicking that my one yr old budgie has scaly face. When I purchased him (?) 3 months ago his beak was pristine. I live in rural WA and a visit to the nearest vet is 8 hrs away. Is it scaly face and is there an over the counter remedy?

Yes, classic scaly face mites. I've only ever used the Beaphar brand of mite treatment (Ivernectin). Bear in mind all birds need to be treated as per the instructions and the cage(s) need to be kept thoroughly clean.

If you don't feel confident using this then please contact your vet.

Thank you kindly for your quick reply. I shall purchase some immediately. Would I treat the other budgie as well despite it not showing any symptoms?

Mhm, face mites. My first budgie died from them because I didn’t take her to the vet in time. It looked much worse though, so I’m sure with the right treatment yours will be fine. :)

Yes please. Guaranteed he already has the mites.
A vet is express posting noromectin injection drops to me today along with a spray. Should I notice an improvement in Pilot’s beak/will it return to normal, or will it remain somewhat brittle looking? Oh to have an avian specialist within a 1000km radius!

The damage to her beak will grow out in a couple of months. It'll be like they were never there ;)

Hahaha you live in WA so I guess the distance could be a lot worse lol. At least you are able to get the help from a vet even though you can't get to them easily, that is wonderful!
