I love the vendors here, but occasionally I have to go the cheap route :o::unsure1:

I found this on Amazon, but a Google search gave some conflicting info. Is sandalwood a safe chewing/shredding wood for beaver birds? I like how large it is (or at least appears to be)

Hopefully this link works

I'm not sure what wood that is as I have seen it under many different names, but I would not buy that toy. The beads look shiny, which usually means they are painted or lacquered and so unsafe :(

Finding cheaper toys with no cotton rope (because I’m *paranoid*) and safe wood and no lacquering and no bells and good reviews is so stupidly difficult.

I am just going to buy a drill and make my own dumb toys.

It is really hard that's for sure. I think a lot of folks with larger more destructive birds do a lot of 2×4 and other chunks of wood they cut themselves and really utilize ss skewers with wood chunks and scraps of other toys.

I actually see it called pepper wood a lot, which doesn't give me a lot of information. There are some hardwood pepper woods in Brazil, and some in California that are known under a bunch of names like Bay Laurel and Black Myrtle. I know some myrtles are safe and some aren't. Some say it is sassafrass wood, which is not safe.

So, basically, I have no idea what wood it actually is, and I wouldn't risk it.

I feel you! One of the main drivers for making Lil Monsters is because I found it exceedingly frustrating to find toys for my birds!

Yeah, I’ve made a few Frankenstein’s monster toys from the leftovers of others. I’m down to my last bits now, and am waiting on a huge one from TBB TOYS but it’s stuck in Texas because of weather delays, and the nearest pet store here is Petsmart and their toys suck, So I’m getting antsy now.

Where can I find just the skewers? I must not be using the right wording when searching, I keep getting food skewers.

I used to get the Expandable Habitats ones from TNT bird toys but I don't see them listed anymore.

Here's their direct site:

Long Chewable Hanger is what you want ;)

Blu's also has one that comes with extra stainless steel bits that are a lot of fun!

I also have a nickel plated twister skewer:

I personally wouldn't trust amazon for specifics. Look how many wrong sizes and such are on the other thread.
I tend to be safe and buy from stores who specialize in bird toys.

I have a logistics question - once I put something on the skewer, how do you keep it on there? Like if I drill a hole big enough to get the end of the skewer through, what do I use as a stopper? Or does the little loopy bit unscrew?

I have had zero luck on any toy lasting longer than a few days :roflmao: I’m going to have to start buying in bulk and starting a toy box to switch them out constantly. She’s more expensive than my kid:rofl:

The loopy bit unscrews. For those I tend to use something like a stainless steel washer at the end so you can have items with larger holes not fall off :)
