Hello everyone. I've been a lurker here for many years to find advice on raising my birds, so I hate that this is the reason I've finally made an account, but here we are...
After much contemplation, I've made the difficult decision to rehome by blue and gold macaw, Eti (eh-tee). I have had him since he was 5 months old, and the truth is that my life has just changed greatly in the past several years. I cannot give him the amount of time and focused attention he needs and deserves, and I want to find him a home that can. I just want him to be happy, and as much as it breaks my heart, I just can't give him that.
Eti has very few behavioral issues and is largely just a typical male macaw in his prime. He's done well even in an apartment for the past decade and I've received zero complaints. Of course, this doesn't mean he doesn't vocalize very loudly at times. It tends to be brief though. He prefers to talk or sing instead.
During the pandemic, he did develop some hormonal plucking, but I was able to curb it with lots of structure and paper foraging toys. He still has incidents, however, but I think that with proper care this won't occur. He also has bitten before and I can't say he won't do it again. Bites have been rare, but usually associated with overstimulation and/or hormones.
Any prospective adopter should definitely have experience with large birds, either owning or volunteering. Eti is a wonderful bird who only wants lots of attention and love, but he is not for anyone who is unprepared for the challenge of living with a macaw.
I have reached out to Phoenix Landing, a wonderful rescue, rehoming, and education organization in my area, but it has been over half a year, so I'm hoping I can find him a home faster by posting here.
Eti has a 6 ft x 7 ft x 3 ft King's double macaw cage which can go with him if you're able to transport it, but it does not have a divider or bottom grates (they were lost in a move). If he has plenty of out of cage time, I'm sure he'd be fine in smaller if necessary. He also has a celtei macaw carrier that will go with him.
Please let me know if you have any questions. There will of course be a vetting process and a rehoming fee. I am willing to travel if necessary for a good match as long as it is within driving distance.
I've included some pictures of Eti being adorable. He absolutely loves hanging upside down and doing tricks for attention.
