Kei used to be really good about recalling. I'm working with him on it again. I believe that it's really important for flighted birds to be recall trained whenever possible in case they escape.
This is from tonight. He used to fly to me right away, at one point without food.

That is what I want to teach mine. How do you do it, just offer a treat just beyond their reach, and give a keyword?

That's what I did. I'm sure there are other ways, but food seemed to work best with Kei.

Recall is more than just important, IMO :) It's essential.

Kei does have a really sweet voice.

If I can make a suggestion? Dont let Kei simply fly over and grab the treat - that puts all the emphasis on the treat/reward and not the action. Try and get a distinct cue into the start ('come', 'fly', hand-signal - I saw the finger waggle, is that your cue?) and then bridge the behaviour/action ('Good', Clicker, etc) which gives the bird the chance to think about what it just did and the reward that it's just about to get for doing the action. This can help the behaviour become more consistent and can also take away the requirement for the treat 100% of the time.

He's saying "Do I have to? Can't you just give it to me?"
Those Pionus noises are sooo cute!!

Yep I started with teeny tiny slivers of unsalted peanut to entice my guys.

I agree recall is something to strive for :)

Good to know. I'll work on that. ;)
