A friend of mine got to go to their fair in the UK and saw a rare breed of horse. Suffolk Punches. There are less then 500 of the pure breds left and around 1200 are mixed with Belgian blood lines. They're making a slow come back and he made sure to grab me lots of pictures of them! The Suffolk Punch was mainly used in farm work, but many served in WWI helping pull heavy artillery.

I only heard of them because he told me. :o: He loves them and goes to see them every year and to pet them. There are a lot of little known breeds out there, but I love the draught horses best of all.

Look at the neck on that last pic of the Suffolk Punch. No doubt that horse was bred for pulling.

I LOVE horses, but I am very intimidated by them..probably because I respect their power. Those breeds would give me a heart attack if I was to see those up close. They are like the bodybuilders of horses!

Poor drafts had a hard time for years when they became "useless". I've aliways liked ardennas and brabants, suffolk punch is a nice breed as well. Personally I own shires, but maybe someday I'll add another big draft breed to our farn. Thanks for sharing!! Beautiful :D

Kalan, did you see Disney's movie, War Horse? They did a great job showing how the horses were used in WWI. Gave the horse too much anthropormistic outlook, I felt, but a good movie.

My Great Uncle had a Percheron we rode. Wonderful old guy who always stopped instantly when you fell off and then snuffled your face until you got up again.

They look like real gentle sweet horses!

First thing I thought was "Whoa, look at the size of those hooves! I would hate to have one of them step on my feet!" My daughter's retired jumper is a real butt when it comes to stepping on toes. He will deliberately edge his hoof over slowly until he steps on your toes while you're grooming him. :D

Living in Brooklyn I don't get to see horses much. I did once get to see the Budweiser Clydsdales though. They were being housed out at Floyd Bennet Field prior to a parade and I went to see them. They had a mounted cop on one side of the fence and a Clydsdale on the other side. That Clydsdale dwarfed the police horse. It was enormous! I would never have realized the size difference had I not seen them side by side. Draft horses are awesome. Now that's REAL horsepower!
