Psittacus Microspheres 20/10

Lately Ripley has decided all pellets are just in his way, including the trusty Zupreem FruitBlend that has always been my fall back. The good news is he is eating veggies for the most part, but since he already doesn't eat a ton, is always at risk of being underweight, and it being hormonal season where he likes to regurgitate on everything....I need a way to keep his weight up. And since he changes his mind about which foods are edible at a moment's notice, zero pellets in his diet has historically been a flop.

I was going to get a bag of Psittacus Omega as he has eaten that in the past, but browsed the site and found this: WET & DRY MICROSPHERES 20/10

It's small size, which usually he doesn't bother with, even when mixed with chop (which I tried with several small pellet varieties) but since it is meant to be hydrated without losing its shape...I figured why not give it a try.

So, the bag arrived a couple days ago. And to my delight, Ripley actually ate them yesterday and this morning. Usually it takes him quite a while to try a new food!

Quibble did not have the same reaction to them but as he eats Roudybush, I am not worried about him as much, and will keep them out of his chop dish next time.

Regardless, it is nice to have something else in the rotation. Figured I would post for anyone else looking for a unique option.

Do you keep pellets available 24/7 for him Shawna? My guys go in/out of pellet consumption but since it's the only 24/7 available food it does get eaten or nibbled daily.

Yep! Always has dry pellets available

We're a few weeks in now, and Ripley is still eating his veggies and microspheres!

I've also gotten him to accept a few Harrison's Coarse a day. So overall, in a much better position than we were a month ago!

OMG i love the Microspheres! I'm glad that Ripley is eating them well! All of my birds go crazy for these! They're my favorite addition to chop!

At the risk of jinxing myself, I think we've finally hit a winning combination of things.

My main take away? Smaller portions. I was so worried about him losing weight that I was overfeeding significantly. And of course that meant he filled up on whatever he liked best and left the rest. I had tried to scale back several times over the years, but scaling back from huge portion to large portions obviously wasn't enough.

So he gets a breakfast of all the things I want him to eat, and then he gets a dinner with some of his favorites; namely he gets a Nutriberry, a bit of seed, and more dry pellets.

His breakfast is fairly consistent: veggies, sprouts, microspheres, hemp seed, 2 almonds (occasionally with Vetafarm Calcivet, as seen here), sometimes with a 1/2" piece of bird bread, Harrison's HP, occasionally some Power Treats, and couple of pepitas.

I used to only be able to count on him eating almonds.

He's consistently been eating everything. Every once in a while he's not too keen on something and leaves it, but I just skip a day or two of that item and he's happy to see it again after that.

Interesting! My peabrain is slow this morning. I would try this for Rocket. He does eat his pellets, seems to prefer the Roudybush that is also in his cup with the zupreem. He has always been a thin bird. He has a faster metabolism than my other crimsons. Picky about veggies but does have favorites. The others are more diverse. I can't tell if the minor is much different than the 20/10. Would it be the ingredients or the size? So glad you found something Ripley will eat.

Found the ingredients.. 20/10 more protein. Looks like a better choice.

The microspheres are unique in that they don't break down when wet. I've mixed in other pellets and they end up making a paste. I mix these microspheres into a bit of thawing chop, and they stay in pellet form the whole time, usually 3-4 days before I have to thaw more chop out.

I had a memory from Hankmacaw. No clue how this popped up in my head but it did. She talked about tofu for birds and so I went to the search bar to make sure I remembered correctly. I put Tofu in the top search and Hankmacaw as the member and several posts came up where she talked about it. I tried it a long time ago with Henry and Lola and if I also remember correctly it was not well received. Henry gave it the side eye after the surprise of seeing something new, unusual and very white in his cup with his other goodies. Pretty sure it had the same effect as a bug... heck no... I ain't touching that! Would like to work that in to a treat for Rocket. It does freeze well so no worries of it spoiling before you use it. I have not ventured into tasting it myself but I've save a lot of recipes just in case I get a wild hair to cook with it.

Tofu will absorb any flavors it's near; it's pretty tasteless by itself. I really like it in scrambled eggs, in stir fry, and also used to marinate it in salad dressing before pan searing it and adding it to salad. I should use it more often

Thanks so much! I follow a guy on Instagram who cooks vegan. I'm not vegan but I can appreciate meals without meat too. The Nard Dog Cooks. I love the sound of his voice, he could be a great story teller. His videos are on Facebook too. Here's a link to one recipe I saved if you want to browse his recipes. I've also wanted to try soaking red lentils and make flat rounds like tortillas with them to share with the birds. I'm going to try mixing in with scramble eggs and maybe even a quiche. Dang... I'm getting hungry.

I didn't know they can have tofu. That's great, I've been looking for a good hardboiled egg replacement, since animal protein is not as good for the parrot diet as originally thought.
