Pls help me understand

It's been an eventful day w Ducky today.

First the visit from the black racer (posted a thread about that).

He started exhibiting nesting behaviour. I found it odd but cute as he doesn't have a female companion.

He proceeded to make a piece of straw so fine he got it tangled around his feet.

I stayed with him, trying to help but he got it untangle.

He proceeded to go to a ribbon that was tied w a chewing block and tried to fly around the cage still holding on.

I gave him some crochet cotton thread and he went berserk...I saw this behaviour w my finches.

I put an open nest in the cage and he's almost humming w excitement. Now he's trying to stretch it out so he can lay in it.

Is this normal? The female cardinal comes as normal and as far as I can observe it's for his fallen seeds.

Ducky has never been so calm in the large cage as he is now.

Any advice welcomed.

Did you say Ducky is a Cardinal? If so it's possible it is just for fallen seeds or he just is getting comfortable. Has he been near any females even if it was just for a bit because sometimes male Cardinals might help make a nest for nesting females. Otherwise it sounds normal. (I apologize if I miss read what kind of bird Ducky is :,D)

That's ok...Ducky is a male canary. I believe he's a mix of yellow and timbarado.

Our visits are from a wild female cardinal.

I was wondering if her visits might be encouraging him to nest preparation.

He has been chewing on items, like ribbon, straw etc a lot. And if those items aren't available he just flys back and forth.

Oh oh don't hear him. Need to go check.

All signs point to preparing for a mate.

He continues to chew on ribbons and making them into thread...if he was a girl Rapunzel would've been a good name.

It definitely does sound like that, but I don't think there will be any issues unless he does actually get a mate.

Would taking away all nesting materials help or is that wrong?

I've tried giving him some things for interest but it seems he's off. He just chews them really finely then drops them around the cage.

He is in a high pitch screech and when she shows up he's appearing to show off what he has done...if that makes sense.

So I'm getting told oh he wants/needs a mate but I don't want to go through what I did w the zebra finches.

Yet, I don't want him to be agitated or frustrated either.

I think that will help a bit. Maybe try moving some of the decorations or anything else in his area a bit just for a slight change. He might be willing to explore instead of creating a nest.

I did end up taking away the larger double sided mirror, straw, ribbon and open nest.

He does play w me w a crochet bamboo thread ..

We had a pretty good rain storm blow in and I brought him inside earlier; he just flew back and forth

I feel he's trying to relay something but I'm not understanding, yet.

The changes in his area should help him a bit, I'll still be looking into this in case you want more information on this later after I've done some research. Good luck with Ducky!

Tried something new today...

Normal routine is when I hear the outside birds chirping, I get up and wake up Ducky; usually dark in trailer so he's half awake. I take him outside...in my pj's...wait on him to go into his outdoor cage. Wish him a great morning until I come outside later.

Today I tried, waiting until he was up then taking him outside. Also, I let him explore the cage to make sure everything was to his liking and THEN came in.

It took him long to call out for me and to pace...I can't wait until the weather isn't so humid right off the back so I can have my coffee and sit outside next to him for a bit.
