Hello. I have an Indian Ringneck. He is now 1 year old. We got him when he was 6 months old. In july he lost his tail feathers and some of the wing feathers ( he can not fly ). So my question is ,is he sick ,was he moulting ? Does the feathers grow back ? He is not plucking. He seems happy. And has good diet. I am so sad to see him wanting to fly and not to be able. Please can you help me ?

Is he mutilating his feathers?? My IRN actually did this to her tail feathers and one wing . She was clipped pretty severely and she had had an infection due to a severe ingrown ring band (before I got her). The vet didn't know if she originally was mutilating her feathers due to pain and now it was ingrained or if the feathers growing in was bothering her. We saw many specialists due to ankle and infection and was told the same along as the lines of above.

I started adding these supplements to her diet and she now let's her tail and wing feathers grow and can fly! Same cage same, routine, toys and foods just added the supplements

How do you know he's not doing it himself? Id take him to the vet to be checked out as something I'd going on to lose all those feathers in a week

Please keep us updated! I was told Anne probably started mutilating her feathers out of pain- it started with her tail feathers and the hypotheses that she was mutilating her one wing because the feathers that where growing in was bothering her or she was expanding her habit of destroying her feathers. I never actually saw her do it until later on. But you could see how she chewed on her wing feathers. Id find her tail feathers on the bottom of the cage. And if your bird isn't physically doing it then I have no idea how the feathers would look how they do.

Sending well wishes your way!

Unbelivable ! No avian vet in our town . We have to drive 300 km to a vet. Is it okay for such a long drive for a bird ? ‍♀

Do you have any photos of the fallen feathers? That is pretty far. Van you post your general location maybe another members knows of a closer vet? Are you looking for an avain vet or a avian certified vet? There are more avian than ACV.

Maybe that vet can do a Tele med appointment and you can send out samples if your comfortable in obtaining the sampls.

I live in romania,Sighisoara. In our town are 3 vets but not an avian vet. They do not know much about birds. I dont have the feathers anymore. He lost them a long time ago. 3 months ago. i asked a vet about the feathers and he said they will grow back. But they dident !!! that is why i am asking here cause noone could help me untill now. I am gonna look for an avian vet online, maybe they could help. Thank you so much for youre patietnce and youre help. Alex is a happy bird. He sing ,speaks and plays all day. He is free ,not caged.i think he is unnhappy cause he can not fly. But is not my fault.

Adding the feather supplement will help them grow back or foods with a little higher protein and B vitamins. I give mine organic grass fed(the milk they use) cheddar cheese and soft boiled eggs. My birds don't get as much unfiltered sunlight as I'd want for them so I also give them that vitamin D supplement. IRN are a little different than some parrots because they are in a food rich environment .In the wild IRNs eat seeds (germinated and sprouted mostly) grains, flower blossoms, vegetables, berries, nuts, leafy greens pollen and nectar. With some parrots of have to be careful about adding a too rich diet- but IRN have rich diets in the wild. I hope this helps.

Because your bird can not fly and once could I would add padding to his/her surroundings incase she tries to flu but instead lands hard on your floor and gets hurt. I used pillows and comforters.

Your IRN is beautiful and I hope you both have each other for many years.
