Picard, our beloved parrotlet appeared out of sorts last night. We took him to the vet this morning and it isn't ideal. Waiting on bloods still but the thought is he may have bad gastro. He is staying to get fluids and be in a temp controlled box. He is on antibiotics now to help with the gastro. We are seriously hoping the bloods don't find something worse. He will be overnighting at the avian vet. From the physical exam the vet doesn't believe he has ascites, which is good as we hope it isn't his liver.

We do not know what caused the gastro. All the other birds are normal so likely it was something he found somewhere. Maybe a piece of fruit or something that we missed in clear up. We simply don't know.

Send warm thoughts to Picard. We are very worried about him.

The blood results we have thus far show signs of infection. We will get the liver results tomorrow as that has to be sent to a more specialised place.

He is staying another night at hospital. He is generally looking very poor but there is a little sparkle in his eye that is asking to not give up. He has serious liver malfunction. We cannot do a liver biopsy because he is so small and weak. So we cannot know what is harming his liver. His gastro appears now to have been secondary.

Picard is home. He is terminal but hanging on. He was so happy to see his brothers I haven't seen him so happy since hear them chirping. He is on palliative care with us we have 4 medications to continue.

It is a sad situation. From his blood it is believed he has either a tumour near/on the liver or liver cancer.

However we feel much better this evening than yesterday. It means a lot that he is home and the whole flock is around him. He is isolated and in a temp controlled setting but within the bird room so that he can hear everyone. There is no doubt he is benefiting as he looks out at his brothers when he has the energy. He is mostly sleeping. He has an appetite still which is good. We know it will get worse, we aren't in denial about that. Each morning will be scary but we gave him his medicine without issue this evening and will continue that plan as long as he is with us.

We love him very much. We have shed lots of tears over the last few days.

I am very sorry about the turn of events, but what luck that he gets to be home with those that love him.

I’m so sorry to hear that Picard is not doing so well. Happy for him that he is at least home and surrounded by love and safety.

Picard passed away this morning around 9am in my partner's hands. He was deeply loved and surrounded by his flock at the end.

It has been a very sad week. We cannot know why he ended up with liver cancer or a tumour, but I am sure genetics were part of it. The vet didn't find other signs typical of say fatty liver disease, he was in a good condition other than the sudden failure of his little organs, which were probably dealing with cancer for sometime in the background. It is all just so sad. He was just about 8 years old.
