Hi everyone,

I'm reading up on beaks and was just wondering if anyone has photos of young budgies with growing, flaking beaks? Would be great to know how it looks like. Also do beaks flake during a moult?

Thank you!

If normal healthy looking beak is showing underneath then you shouldn't be worried in my opinion [if you have a concern that is]. Beaks can look rough when they flake off. And I don't have photos but only this little comment.

Is it possible for a bird to chip the tip of it's beak off from rubbing/grinding/chewing?

I think my budgie may have done just that but I'm not sure if it's from growth or an accident. The vet noticed it but didn't seem concerned at how it looked.

It's quite normal for a longish tip to break off during play/chewing.
Mine have it happen all the time.
I will buy more wood toys if I notice a tip getting too long in hopes the natural chewing trims it down.

As long as it doesn't affect his/her eating - which the tip doesn't really - then it's nothing to worry about.

Ah I didn't realise this is common!

Yeah she's eating fine :) will it grow back or stay that way till the beak grows more and it gets filed down?

Both! It'll stay like that until it grows out some, all while naturally getting filed from chewing toys.

I feel like I've gone crazy!

I just looked at Preeno's beak this morning and it's grown back already?!

Even from side view it doesn't look chipped anymore :o:

Tried to get a photo but she's extremely hyper :roflmao:
