Percy has the same skin condition as last year he will be going to the vet tomorrow same vet as last year he has a tube sock collar on and does not eat right so I will be hand feeding him he might need shots for infection twice a day that is what I had to do last year they might also put a heavier collar on him

Re: Percy is going to the vet tomorrow

Curiosity question if I may: Do you allow Percy much or any time outside, in a safe flight, cage or aviary to get natural sunshine and humidty on his skin and even rain showers? Reason I ask is that I have taken in a couple of Goffins recently (few weeks ago) who also looked kinda bad when I got them but already their feather condition is improving by being outside and fed a good quality diet other than seeds and pellets that the prior keeper(s) only fed them. Good luck at the vet office, will be curious to hear what he/she says.

Re: Percy is going to the vet tomorrow

Not clear on something: Are his feather follicles damaged or does he have any other condition which makes it not possible for the feathers to grow back or is he just pulling them out as they start to grow back? Sorry if I missed a prior explanation of his feather problems.

If feathers are capable of growing back, time outside daily would really help in my experience (in many cases anyway). You might consider constructing/building a spacious window flight for Percy if your windows open by being pushed/drawn upwards. That way he can go outside and come back inside easily and safely. I see you are in Austin Texas so I think the weather is fairly mild for him to get the benefit of the outdoor sunshine and humidity yr. round? Also same flight/aviary playmates sometimes help take their mind off themselves in my experience. Again good luck to you both whatever you decide to do.

Re: Percy is going to the vet tomorrow

I have had four vets tell me his feathers will not grow Thanks for the idea of an out door aviary he did not get out much this year because it was a hot summer mostly over 100 degrees some people keep their birds outside here
I do not let them out side without me because I have a hawk that lives accross the street I do have a screened in back porch that the birds go out when there is time and weather is good :hug8:

Re: Percy is going to the vet tomorrow

Oh I see. The feathers can't grow back. Thanks for that info.

Just to clarify what I was also meaning about the benefits of an outdoor flight & exposure to natural sunshine, humidity and rain showers: I did not mean to allow Percy outside in a flight if it was not safe. I was meaning to construct the flight in such a way so it would be totally safe, such as using double sides and bottom and with a solid roof with overhangs - with the back against the side of your home, where a window may be located (if possible). And to place it facing south if possible or southeast. Etc. ...

Yes, 100 degrees may be too warm for them (?) even if not feathered to hold in body heat. I guess the local avian vets would be the people to check with about that subject. Placing him outside during days that are in the low 90's or less should be just fine though.

Just trying to help, not pressure. Have a nice day.
