Patches is refusing all chop - where do we go from here?

Oh boy. So, as you all know when we first got Patches, he was on an all-seed diet, or rather, he was on a bird mix where the only thing he ate out of it were safflower seeds. :meh:

It's been months of a lot of back and forth. Trial and error. A lot of frustrated emotions. I know it's not his fault, but I feel like he went personally out of his way to make the transition more difficult. We finally got to a good place about 5 months ago. 50% pellet, 30% chop, 20% treats (not just seeds, but also walnuts, dried fruits, etc.).
Chop has always been a difficult topic for me. I like to eat a lot of veggies, my bird on the other hand would rather die than touch a single one. However, I finally figured out a little "cheat" code. He really liked circular, squishy veggies. CUE THE CHOP MONTAGE! :cool6:

Yes, we had mixes with all sorts of beans (beans I've literally never heard of but have learned to cook with because of him). His chop was basically a wide variety of different beans, with finely chopped greens mixed in with some of his favorite grains (oats, barley, semolina, etc.) I literally thought I made it. In fact, when people asked about my boy's diet, I would proudly say how much chop he eats and how much time I spend making it. :xflove:

Well, fast-forward to last week and this week... CHOP IS OUT LADIES AND GENTS. NO CHOP. UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES! All other foods are eaten without issue, including the pellets. (thank God there's at least that) I've tried Birdie bread and got a similar response. I went out and bought other veggies as I thought he might've just gotten bored with the current chop assortment. But nope. Nada. Only thing he'll kinda eat (mostly suck the juice out) is specifically red (not green) apples and some plums. I'm at a loss... on top of that, I've witnessed my little Satan's spawn try some of his chop, shake his head and then proceed to try some of his own poop!!!! Like seriously!? I know my chop isn't that bad dude!!!! :shake:

Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this? I'm literally at my wits end. How did we regress so quickly? The only other behavioral change in him is that he's extra frisky (we do put him down for 12 hours... but I guess it's just the season) and he sure does love to bite me!!!! :cautious:
I'm sad. I loved making the chops and the birdie breads. I just hate I have to start experimenting all over again. Food ain't cheap in this economy. I'm honestly debating putting a pause on the chop all together and only give him pellets for the time being, then try again later down the road. :sad1:

Have you tried cutting different sizes? Maybe sweeten it up by adding a few berries? I'm not a good source since Merlin eats very few veggies after YEARS of setting them out EVERY.SINGLE.DAY. I call it a win that he eats pellets every day. I have birdie bread recipe made with cream of wheat that my vet gave me you could try. Merlin won't eat it but your guy might. Also don't forget the grain bakes, there are lots of recipes on here for those. Good luck and don't get too discouraged, his diet has definitely improved since you got him

Could you share the cream of wheat recipe? I'm honestly prepared to try anything! Never heard of grain bakes, need to look into them!

Yes I have tried different sizes. He normally like things he can easily hold in his small conure talons.

My guys ate more when it wasn't small, like they were taking my food, which they always tried.

Ripley and Patches would get along great ;)

Every time I get Ripley onto a good diet plan, he senses my sigh of relief and interprets this as a signal to go to war.

Find a pellet he actually likes? "I hate that now." :grumpy:

Got his veggies just the way he likes them? "AS IF."

Bird Bread? "Thanks for the projectile." :sneaky:

I don't really have good advice, more just solidarity. I have converted all of my previous birds to healthy diets. Ripley's main goal in life is to make sure my score is never 100%. He keeps me humble, I guess!

I will say though that if he is totally against any veggies, I do take them away for a few weeks and reintroduce later. Sometimes I think he just gets bored. I also switch between chopped up veggies and just whole chunks. Sometimes it's enough to get him eating again.

I also measure out food in small portions and that seems to help.

God can you imagine feeding both Patches and Ripley at the same time? Both of them rejecting random stuff? I think I'd actually lose my mind

Yepp..Patchy's thrown pieces of brocolli on me, kicked the chop out of his bowls and then once when I was putting his bowls into his cage, he pooped on my head

I think I'm just going to give the veggies a break for this week and then see how he's feeling. I'll keep you guys updated for sure.

I've done fresh veggies up until now. I can try boiling some frozen and see if he takes.
I don’t boil them just put hot water over them in a bowl let sit and sieve water out
Posie prefers this peas sweetcorn carrots green greens mix to fresh

I've had a couple of birds also prefer the frozen mix. My Hahns was affectionately referred to as Bunnicula as she would squish all the juice out of frozen carrots and leave the drained husk behind

So a couple of updates with Patchy...

Instead of the regular chop, I started out slowly reintroducing food. Today we did a bowl of pellets next to a bowl of oats. He took to both the pellets and the oats, tomorrow I'm going to try adding a vegetable and see if it peaks his interest.
