Hello,
My name is Samantha. A neighboor just recently gave us two parakeets a male and female. The female has developed a reddish colored mass in between her legs. She seems to be in ditress and is having a hard time breathing. What could this be and is there anything I can do to help her? Please help...

Thank you,
Samantha

I hope someone else sees this. It sounds like an egg maybe? I don't have much experience with female birds.

What I can tell you is, please contact a vet. Do you have or know of an avian vet in your area?

If you tell us where you are located, we'll be able to help you find an avian vet in your area. :) It's possible your bird could be egg bound or have fluid build-up from a reproductive issue - either way, I'd recommend seeing an avian vet ASAP.

Okay here is the picture. This bird needs a vet RIGHT AWAY! Please call one, are any of the ones listed above able to work for you location wise?

This does not look good.

Looks like it could be a prolapse, though it's hard to tell from that angle. There is some advice in this link about what to do to increase her chances of survival until you can get to the vet if that's what it is, but this is not a treatment! Just triage until you can get her in. Either way, she needs to see a vet ASAP.
