In the pull out base of our cage we lay a sheet of newspaper just to help keep it a bit cleaner. Just lately our feathered friend has started to reach through the wire floor bars to rip off bits of the paper. Any of you wonderful people know why?

Lots of birds (especially females depending on the species) shred paper for nesting material or just for fun. I don't know much about finches/canaries so I don't know I this would be helpful, but I give my lovebird shredding toys and rolled up paper every now and then to keep the newspaper shredding at bay. :)

A simple one would be just a cardboard tube stuffed with strips of newspaper :) Depends a bit if that will last long but those are cheap and easy to make, my parrotlet really enjoyed crumpled paper balls too! Even easier, just buy a stack of printer paper, crumple one into a ball and you're all set! Just discard when it's gotten poop on it haha
