Ampho B is not normally obtainable in the UK where I am and my research suggested Sodium Benzoate as an alternative treatment. It was ineffective though when I treated my budgie Eeyore with it and he eventually passed away.

My own flock's experiences with AGY has led me to some thoughts on the subject - that AGY is a symptom of some other issue that is harming the bird and allowing AGY to take a stronger foothold in its weakened body - but I am not a vert or a research scientist and my opinion should therefore carry little weight.

I thought I would share my experience.

My understanding is birds can carry it asymptomatically, which would mean yes, it probably does overwhelm them as soon as something else is going on.
I've had a fairly "closed" flock for years, now the ones dealing with it is/was my original birds. Who have had essentially no direct contact with any of my newer budgies and are older. Em's a 6yr old EB, would not surprise me if she has/starts having other health issues which is why I hope she can handle this.

I just got home with Ampho B, I'll start it tonight. I am kinda worried about the suddenness of her behaviour shift.

She's much brighter this morning and I saw her chewing up a perch. Back to protesting meds, which I've cut back to only the ampho B and Metronidazole.
Last night she was picking through a dry mix I made of pellets, egg food and "budgie starter". She'll have access to that 24/7 and I'll keep offering some seed plus millet treats to try and make up for medicating...

I haven't been stressed about her behaviour in days. No more sitting fluffy, back to protesting meds every step of the way. She has finished her antibiotic course and the ampho B will be continuing for a fair while. I'll start monitoring her weight closely now to make sure she's bouncing back.
So much more lively in every area. Em has always been my quietest budgie, made worse when Obsidian passed and she hasn't had someone to hang out with. Last couple days she has finally started showing interest in her toys :) Currently making a massive mess of cork for me!

I am genuinely confused with absolutely everything I have been reading.
I just got off the phone with the vet before, she's going to look into some things for me, talk to the vet who usually sees my budgies and call back.
I've voiced treating for AGY with and without confirming it. She mentioned Fluconazole which I already knew is a possibly less affective treatment, and now I'm reading that that can be toxic to budgies. Ampho B sounds exactly as risky from everything I have read. Is there any treatment that is actually somewhat safe or do I really have choose which I want to risk more??
Ampho B was the only treatment found to effectively treat budgies without inducing toxicity. But still, long-term studies are scarce (as with most avian meds). From my experience, treating a flock of 6 birds, there have only been two individuals that may have some long-term affects. And they were on Ampho B for 60 days. Popcorn (cockatiel) appears to be having some liver issues, which are possibly congenital (vet thursday) and Cosmo became ill with another condition following the medication. But there is nothing definitively pointing to it being *from* the medication. Possible issues later on are still preferable vs. acute avian gastric yeast related issues.

I'll admit to being a little overwhelmed with stress when I made that post :o:
I'd done reading from threads on here and just got a little concerned, I know many medications come with risks and I've just been worried about causing any harm to her organs when she's already on the older side, I can't say whether she already has some things going on.

Me too. I honestly had no idea which one the vet had decided on till I went to pick it up. The way I have to go about it seems a little unconventionally but it's obviously helping so I don't mind.
I'm very thankful for my vet being so willing. I know birds are not their favourite patients
When I was picking up medication for a dog on Saturday even the nurse asked how she was doing :)
