Our "Mayor of the Avenue" award is presented to a member who exhibits the qualities that distinguish them to be an upstanding credit to the Avenue, a loving, informed, conscientious and caring bird parront and an all around good neighbor.
I am happy to announce that Chandra is October's Mayor of the Month.
I enjoyed reading your interview, and am sure that everyone else will as well!
1. What kind of birds do you have (age, species and names)?
Happy – gold cap conure (15 years old)
Chya – sun conure (12 years old)
Kari – green cheek conure (7 years old)
Zephyr – turquoise green cheek conure (4 years old)
Zia – Yellow sided green cheek conure (unknown)
Hachi – green cheek conure (much older but unknown)
Tuck – green cheek conure (5 years old?)
Giggie – yellow sided green cheek conure (unknown)
Carlton – green cheek conure (7 years old)
Jewel – turquoise green cheek conure (4 years old)
Rocco – green cheek conure (10-11 years old)
Julip – roseifrons conure (5 years old)
Pip – canary (unknown)
2. What got you interested in birds?
When I was little, we couldn’t have pets except for fish/birds. I had a little parakeet…”Tweety” I have loved birds ever since.
3. What have your birds brought to your life?
Happiness, knowledge and fellow bird loving friends. I really enjoy spending time with them. It is just so relaxing to hangout and watch them play and interact with me and each other.
4. What have you learned from sharing your life with your birds?
Some things just weren’t meant to stay clean and most importantly, sometimes you have to do what is best for them.
5. What's one birdie memory that will stay with you forever?
There are many for everyone but Hachi saying “come-ere” when she wanted to be picked up or her little squeaking happy noises when you rub her just the right way.
6. Where is your birds main living area?
They have their own room on the bottom level of the house and an aviary outside. I can open the back door and they can go in and out. Although the majority of them will not stay out unless I am there as well. However, we will be moving them upstairs for the winter into the two bedrooms I have removed the wall in between from. It’s warmer upstairs during the winter.
7. Did you change things in your home to accommodate your birds and if so what kinds of things did you change?
Just their own room and I have those slat blinds up on all the windows otherwise someone manages to find a way to bonk their heads on a non-covered window. Aviary off the back door so you really can’t use the back door anymore.
8. Are you involved in any kind of bird related group or activities?
Just AA and a few Facebook groups. I also try to do things for Marie at FFOM on occasion. My flock takes up the majority of my personal time.
9. What is the one luxury item you would love to have for your bird(s)?
A tiled birdroom sectioned off for cage free living that opens onto individual aviary sections. The room would be able to be hosed down for easier maintenance.
10. Is there any bird that you dream of owning and if so why?
A painted, pearly or crimson belly girlie because they are so beautiful but I have realized the special needs babies have my heart strings. Although if I had a choice based on personality…two more Jewel birds any color please.
11. Describe a typical day with you at home with your birds.
Up in the morning to give everyone their meds and breakfast, let them fly around and play, go outside if the weather is nice. Basically snuggling and playing with whoever comes to see me or keeping naughty boys out of trouble. Then evenings include a similar session but with mash or veggies for dinner and meds (of course sweeping and cage cleaning before bed).
12. What have you learned about owning birds that you would like to share?
Eyes always on the birds…especially these conures as they get into everything!
13. If you knew then what you know now about birds, what would you do differently?
Having a large flock and some special needs birds, perhaps live next door to Dr. Orosz!
14. What other hobbies do you have?
I enjoy making bird toys and bird stuff as well as coming up with ideas to repurpose furniture. My latest endeavor is an older blanket chest into a file chest. I also have a media center that I want to repurpose into a desk/toy making station and night stands.
