Avenue Spotlight Award
Our "Mayor of the Avenue" award is presented to a member who exhibits the qualities that distinguish them to be an upstanding credit to the Avenue, a loving, informed, conscientious and caring bird parront and an all around good neighbor.
I am so delighted to announce Ann as October's Mayor of the Avenue.
I loved your interview and enjoyed getting to know you a little better!
1. What kind of birds do you have (age, species and names)?
Two cockatiels (Zanie is 4 years old, Tookie is 3 years old)
2. What got you interested in birds?
I grew up in an avian environment, my aunt and grandmother both owned various species of birds. I have been owned by birds (my own birds) for 16 years now.
3. What have your birds brought to your life?
Love and laughter After a long day of work, I can let my hair down, kick off my uncomfortable shoes, and chill with the birds. It's the best part of my day.
4. What have you learned from sharing your life with your birds?
They enrich my life in ways that words cannot express. I have been away from them for about 6 months now due to school/training, and I really feel the sad emptiness of a house that is not filled with bird chatter. What a lonely existence.
5. What's one birdie memory that will stay with you forever?
The first time I was at the breeder to select a bird I was so overwhelmed by the choices - I had an extremely cute clutch of cockatiels to choose from! Zanie was the one that wobble-walked towards me and tried desperately to climb on my finger (he was a very clumsy baby). I knew it was meant to be with him.
6. Where is your birds main living area?
The cage and play area are forever changing location. We recently moved so now they have a corner of the living room.
7. Did you change things in your home to accommodate your birds and if so what kinds of things did you change?
Our living room could be more friendly for guests if we hadn't allotted as much room as we did for the birds. We had to bypass some nice furniture, extra love seat softs, nice rugs, etc to make the birds more comfortable.
8. Are you involved in any kind of bird related group or activities?
Does Avian Avenue count ?
9. What is the one luxury item you would love to have for your bird(s)?
A big Exotic Wood Dream hanging gym!
10. Is there any bird that you dream of owning and if so why?
The alexandrine is my dream bird. I think they are aesthetically pleasing - I just love how they have a huge red beak on a green plumage (green is my favorite color)
11. Describe a typical day with you at home with your birds.
When I'm home the cage door is always opened and the birds are free to do as they see fit. Most of the time Zanie will just chill on my shoulder or knee while I watch a movie/read and Tookie will be rampaging the cage top/play area talking to himself.
12. What have you learned about owning birds that you would like to share?
Every bird is different, even in a subspecies. When you buy a bird you need to love the bird for who they are, not what you expect them to be. Not every cockatiel is affectionate and cuddly, not every african grey will talk, not every caique will be playful, etc. Being loved by a bird is earned, not a privilege.
13. If you knew then what you know now about birds, what would you do differently?
I have had some birds in the past that were more difficult to handle. I still took care of them but never really formed a bond with them. If I had been more persistent with them, I think I could have really learned who they were and appreciated them for that. They say hind sight is 20/20.
14. What other hobbies do you have?
Not much else since I have gone back to university -- is studying a hobby?
15. Anything else you would like to share?
Thank you to all the staff and Roadies for making this a great avian community
