We had a very crazy development this weekend.

Nova started walking very oddly, in the past day (now under our care) she can no longer stand. We checked her out Saturday and she has a massive cancerous tumor. It is so very sad. She is on bed rest and we are trying to decide if we should take her in for an amputation of her wing to try and help her, but the cancer has spread beyond her wing and she is having respiratory issues. It is a tough state. We aren't sure if she will make it through the day.

This is really heart breaking for a few reasons. Nova was very very fearful of humans. So we always gave her space. We have been working really hard to build trust with her and she was finally warming up. We didn't catch the cancer sooner, because we weren't picking her up ever. We wanted her to build trust in her own time. Our other chickens are all over us every morning. Starlight will even jump to my shoulder.

Nova hid her illness very well, and we didn't know anything was wrong until her body just simply couldn't keep up the ruse.

I feel like I failed her. Maybe if we were a little more forceful, a little more physical with her we could have caught this earlier. :( She wasn't running in fear of us anymore. She still was keeping a good distance from us, but over the days she was getting warmer ever so slowly. Now I wonder if that is only because she was sick :(

I gave her watermelon and apple yesterday a few favourites, she was very pleased with that. Today I gave her a bowl of all kinds of special nom noms: mango, apple, blueberries, fresh corn. She hasn't touched them :( She is struggling to hold her body upright. I really don't think an amputation will save her at this point. So at the moment I just want her to feel safe and happy.

Poor little Nova, I am so sorry humans failed you :(

I'm sorry, but don't beat yourself up. Birds do the hide any illness thing to protect themselves and you are trying to give her space to calm down and get used to her new flock. Give her whatever she wants and keep her comfy and if she hangs in there take her to the vet as soon as you can, you never know what might be able to be done till you try:sadhug:

I am so sorry about Nova. Birds will hide their illnesses and you won't know until it is too late. You've given Nova a great life and I heartbroken for you

I'm so sorry but sounds like she has a wonderful life with you even if she is hands off...If its spread then donlt cause her any more pain by any amputation.
Let her enjoy those bountiful treats as long as she is comfortable & able to eat...
They sound so good..

She is doing even worse at this point in the day :( Poor dear. We decided against the amputation. We doubt that pain and trauma will help her at this point and it will not help her move on peacefully.

I have been hand feeding her electrolyte and vitamin water mixture. She is no longer drinking on her own so we have a medical syringe plunger to help her. She actually was happy bawking at me in the lowest most gentle tone. She really appreciated the water. :sad4:

I am having doubts about her making it over night. She seems very comfy in the nest of hay we have made for her in the kitchen. She is just resting. We are going to start her on medical pain management, just need to head to the chemist. It was suggested to use aspirin.

I mean I am not actually sure but for some reason I think that. I seem to vaguely remember people giving it to seagulls to kill them.
