I had no clue! That you so much! I saw them "mating" so labeled him as the girl.

Females are all green, no blue.

Not a problem if they are happy. If they are mating and not fighting, perfect. You don´t have to worry about eggs, and your birds are happy and have not only a buddy but a sex life :) Win-win?

Well, one of them did do the damage in the pictures to the other one. When I caught them mating, it seemed almost he was plucking his neck at the same time, hence the lack of neck feathers (now back). Also, I have seen a few squabbles over the last couple of days

If I need to separate them, will they need partners as they have always been with another bird?

Ah :(
Best keep a close eye on them to be sure they are safe.

I can´t help but chuckle a little inside at the irony of you correcting people for mislabeling your gender all the while calling your boy a girl

I do not know. Parrotlets are not my forte. In my mind I would think they can still enjoy the company of each other from separate cages and in shared flight time.
Maybe @fashionfobie can help with your question.

I was told they were a pair (male and female) so didn't think to check after seeing them mate.

I might get that double flight with divider then.
