New Plum Headed Parakeet

Glad to finally join, I’ve lurked for a while. I brought home a 7-month old plum headed parakeet yesterday. I have a little experience with parrots, but love learning from others and sharing when I can.

Thank you! I feel so dumb. They grabbed him to get him out of his cage where I got him, so when I brought him home, I did the same thing. He’s handfed and knows step up, but understandably runs from hands now. He’s only been home for a few days.

I apologized to him and now I’m just leaving the cage open and offering him millet spray. He’s only 7 months old, so hopefully I can build trust.

I'm quite sure he'll come around, many birds get super shy when in a new place

Not a great photo of him, but he still feels safest in his cage (upside down). I’m happy to report that after quite a bit of patience and spray millet he seems less terrified of my hand. Her was even nibbling my fingers this evening. Such a sweet boy.
