Hello! I just adopted a bird. i felt horrible for him and rather not state the old situation he was living in but he screams from what i was told by the old owner and this is part of the reason for the rehoming and would like advice for newbies. He is a 9 year old caique.he was pretty aggressive when I first got him and had chill out alot and has become a bit cuddling. I am searching up on information but find alot of mismatch information. is there any good sites i can go to? I have never owned a bird before and so this is very new to me but I want to give it my all so he can be loved and safe.

This is probably the best site you go to! Congrats on your new little guy. It’s good to hear he has found a good home. Make sure he has a very large cage, spend as much time with him as you can, and feed him good quality food. Take him for a check up at a vet. It will be good to get established. I used to take my boy with me everywhere in the house - bathroom while showering for work, kitchen while making dinner, every on walks in a stroller. The more he is out of the cage and involved in your life, the happier he will be.

Welcome to the Avian Avenue! You’ve found the right place! Make sure to check the species-specific areas of the forum too. It’s a big adjustment for both you and your new companion, so take it one day at a time and focus on building a strong foundation for your relationship. It pays off.

thank you I'm happy to have found it. I'm not sure what classifieds as large. he came in a 5 foot tall cage but when I got it from the old owner there was only a rope in it. I went out and bought branches and toys but now it seems so cramp in it. the cage is label as large but i don't think it's enough for him. is there a such thing as too big for this breed? cause I definitely going to buy a bigger one.

Main concern for a cage that would be "Too big" is bar spacing :)

Great question! My caique has a 4 foot x 2.5 foot wide cage. It’s a stainless steel one that they don’t make anymore. This is a great cage too:

Here is a photo of my cage set up if it helps.

My cage is 6ft high, 4ft wide, 2.5ft deep. The top third is filled with toys and hiding/sleeping places (I use a guinea pig tube, which is cardboard, that I have attached to the ceiling.....they sleep in it). Also they have a seagrass mat that they LOVE to chew up, but can hide behind if needed. They need lots of toys, lots of things to chew up. They are considered small birds (don't tell them that!) so the bar spacing needs to be the same as for small birds. Gosh, they are full of personality!!! Learn to read their body language. They are really fun birds....full of opinions!

From what I have seen, most cage bar spacing for caiques is recommended to be 5/8” - 3/4”. I know for cockatiels the bar spacing is not recommended to be over 5/8” and my caiques have larger heads than a cockatiel. I would think 3/4” would be the max. It is difficult to find large cages with small br spacing. For this reason, I put together four cages (each 64” x 19”) that have only 1/4” spacing. The last thing you ever want to see is a dead bird because his head got stuck between bars. Toys are also something you have to be very careful about. I had some plastic ring toys my birds loved to play with but one time while I was with them, one of my birds got one over his head and down onto his neck. I removed it before he freaked out, and he may have been able to get out of it, but it scared me enough that I removed those toys. You don’t want ANYTHING in their room/cage that they can get stuck around their necks, so be careful when you choose their toys…!

There is n o such thing as acage too big for a caique. It should match the birds activity level, not its size

Mine only sleep in cages, unless theyre on the lawn sunning themselves
