When you moved it up did you cover the grate with something else or just left it for him to walk on?

I was worried the grate would hurt his feet so I was used the tray part. A lot more cleaning but with how bad his feet work I thought it would feel better for him.

I was thinking about a tray or maybe some cardboard or even a towel. The idea is that the top would be primarily for sleeping and rest while the lower section will be the play area. I don’t know if I can find a tray since my cage is so old. I can’t even find anything to indicate a brand for the cage. (Funny story, my husband bought it for Walter when we first started dating. He knew we were a package deal)

Charlie's cage was old but in very good shape, just look around you'd be surprised at what you can come up with something thats safe and easy to clean.

Walters cage is in great shape. I am getting so many great ideas to help him out. I can’t wait to pull it all together this weekend. I am waiting on a few things to come in the mail and then I’ll clean it up really good and set it up.

@Shannan -- WELCOME to the Avenue!!!

To get a tray replacement-- you might contact a 'metal fabricator' or someone who does welding or metal 'bending'... They should be able to construct/ bend a new tray whatever size....
FYI-- if it's galvanized, then treat it accordingly [friend suggested a wipe-down w/ vinegar]...

Hopefully, someone else w/ experience can advise!

It’s a terrible picture but I am currently not at home. I will post more pictures when I get home and his cage set up. Great idea about the custom tray. My farrier may be able to help with that.

Is he able to eat ok w/ the beak that long?

That picture was taken some time ago. His beak is now trimmed regularly by the vet. Thanks for asking.

I had done a lot of research when I first got Walter 37 years ago but a whole lot has changed, especially over the last 5 years or so. I had no idea until Walter started needing regular beak trims and had a health scare which forced me to find an avian vet (back in the day, we couldn't even find a specialist when I worked with a Golden Eagle). Thankfully we have a good avian vet very close to me. So much has changed so then I got inspired to really do some research and then realized that Walter was getting older (due to more time during Covid) to really observe his entire day). Now that I found this forum, I am looking forward to coming into 21st century bird ownership. So much new to learn..... chop..... medications.... treatments.....behavior.... I am excited to learn and for Walter to benefit... (Oh and it helps that I retired from almost 30 years of teaching.
