Hello everyone I’m new here.
I have a Petey bird he’s an African Grey, he’s about 22 years old. My friend had him for about 10 years and he never allowed them to handle him, they got him from a rescue because his original owner passed away. My friend gave him to my family because they moved out of state and didn’t want to put him through the traumatic move. We’ve had him for about 8 months now. First thing I did was get rid of my pots and pans and bought stainless steel ones, put away all my bath and body works candles, put away all my Scentsy wax melts, but I’m still scared I might have something lurking around that will harm him. Any ideas what I should or shouldn’t have? Treats I should give him? How can we get him to warm up to us? I want him to feel comfortable enough to come to us. My daughter can sit on the floor and he’ll walk up to her but won’t get too close to her. My German Shepherds are scared of him, it’s hilarious watching him chase them to their room and the cat looks at him like he’s crazy (they are never left alone to where to could hurt him). I’m open to suggestions

This does answer your question. You say they´re not left alone, but being allowed to chase is too close and they could get hurt.

Other things are waffle makers, anything with a non-stick coating will need checking to be sure it´s safe. Hairdryers.

Make shut toilet seats a rule.
If flighted, set firm rules about windows/doors. No just 'walking out' anymore.
Do not use the self cleaning cycle on your oven.
No spraying for bugs with out intensive research.
Keep your GSDs out of the room when he's out, the cat also.
Accidents happen so quickly, humans just aren't as fast as an animal's actions.
Nervous frightened dogs may snap in defense eventually.
No air freshener sprays. There may be one or two that are safe, but most are not.
No cooking with open flames in the kitchen when bird is out.
Be cautious of any new appliance (toaster/humidifiers/heaters for exam) as almost everything these days has a non stick coating. Most can be burned off, but be aware you may need time using it away from the bird for a few days.
Be careful with all new toys as some can cause a danger, depending on how your bird plays. Such as frayed ropes, the bell clappers on bells, inappropriate sized toys, etc.

A lot of accidents happen from folk just not being careful, and not using common sense.
If an accident could happen, someday it will. This is a good thought to keep in mind with birds.

Congratulations on your new family member!
Greys are one of the most fun and entertaining of birds.
Their intelligence is undeniable, and will keep you on your toes.
I hope you have many, many wonderful years together.
Be patient, calm, and have no expectations.
Take nothing they do personally (such as bites).
Time is your friend with parrots.
How about some photos?

Parrot loving folk are special. We change our lives and live to meet our birds needs.
Welcome to a most exclusive club. :)

yes, even though I know the dogs and cat fear my Petey they aren’t allowed in the same room as him when the cage is open.

Definitely check the finer details of your ninja before chucking it out- many of us have ninja air fryers and use them around our birds because they’re safe.
