Hello new bird owner here!
I recently rescued a Quaker parrot from outside and I’m assuming he was someone’s pet. I’ve had him for over a week and haven’t been able to track down an owner and I really like the lil guy so I’ve decided to keep him. Obviously I would have liked to have more time to prep for a high maintenance pet but I’ve been doing what I can! Im a reptile and amphibian person so it’s not my first or only pet with some specific care requirements but I’ll say he takes the most attention! I’ve read many care sites and I guess I have a few general questions and would also like to double check some things!
It’ll be long sorry!
- The cage I got from a relative and it’s 30x18x54in and I’m using only natural wood perches and I have around 5 toys in there, (I got more but am saving them to replace these when they get torn up) is 5 enough?
-the only treat he likes is small seeds like the ones I have are labeled for cockatiels? I’ve tried a “parrot mix” with things like pumpkin and sunflower seeds among other things and he doesn’t care for this or millet? The seeds I have are ok as just treats for training and to get him to eat the veggies right??
- how do I get him to stop eating my phone and picking off my scabs
- I have a cat but he’s 12 years old and declawed (I did not declaw him I adopted him when he was 8 and his previous owners did) the bird is in my bedroom and the door stays closed unless I am home and the bird is in the cage. My cat has no interest in him but I do not let the bird out around him or in the room if I’m not home. I’ve been thinking about putting the bird cage in the bathroom at night so my cat can still come sleep with me and get attention too? Any thoughts?
-I’m currently working from 8-4, my bird (Yoshi) wakes up around 10am, I have a puzzle board I fill with snacks each morning so he has something to do (also makes mornings I’m home MUCH quieter) I let him out pretty much the entire time I’m home until he goes to bed around 10. What exactly is the minimum time for him to be out though? If I’m home he’s out. But if I have plans for the day and only have time to let him out for an hour or 2 is this ok if it’s just occasional?
-I’m a college student and I’m starting classes again soon and my schedule will be different. I’ll no longer be working my full time job Luckilu the bulk of my college work is homework which I can do at home so he can be out. But my schedules different each day will this be ok with him or does he need more routine than that? I’m doing 14 hours and working 15-20 a week on top of that. Most social events I go to are more low key and take place at night and we usually hang out at my place! I’ve definitely been late to a social event because it was water change day for my newts and I prioritize them.
- I often spend the weekend at my boyfriends who lives 30 minutes away. I don’t wanna leave him alone so if I got a travel cage (currently looking at one that’s 18x24x18) and just started bringing him would this be ok for him or too stressful?
(I brought him to the the petstore once and he seemed to really enjoy being out and gets excited when the carrier comes out if that means anything)
And he gets a mainly pellet diet, he gets veggies everyday but doesn’t care for them so I mix in seed so he’ll eat it and that seems to be working.
He also has a vet appointment scheduled Monday for a check up and a much needed beak and nail trim
