Hello! Our family is new to the world of owning a bird as a new family member. We brought him our blue Quacker today.
Any tips or advice for a smooth trAnsition would be so appreciated!

Hello! Welcome to AA!

We would love to see some pictures of your quaker!! Does he/she have a name yet?
For the transition some things would be,

1. First it may be easier on the bird, if he/she gets some time to their self for a day or two, till they are settled.
2. If you have treats! You could give them a few, i hear that helps! :)
3. Keep any other animals out of the room, as they might stress out your bird.

That's all i can think of for now, but I'm sure someone will come along and give you some more tips soon!
How old is he/she? Do you know the gender yet?

I hope you enjoy the site!

First of all, welcome! Just take things at his pace. You can read or talk to him by his cage with the door open. Drop treats near him or in his food bowl so he gets more comfortable with you. Once he settles in a little more, you can try target training him. Start by having him touch a chopstick or something similar. Whenever he touches the end of it, give him a treat. Once he gets the hang of that, you can target him in and around his cage with the stick so he gets used to you being near it and having your hand inside of the cage. Quakers are known for being more cage territorial than some of the other parrot species, but this should help decrease some of that territorial behavior in and around his cage. The reason for this, is he will know that good things happen when you're around his cage (treats). It's similar to when people have a puppy and they put their hand in and around the food bowl to keep the puppy from becoming territorial of their food. That being said, sometimes during hormonal times, parrots can still become territorial regardless so that's something to note. Just use caution when that happens to avoid being bitten. Also, target training is a great tool to help get your bird back into his cage before bed.

The next step, would be targeting him onto your hand and telling him "step up" when he does so you can move him as needed, like when you need to clean his cage. Remember to move slowly and talk calmly to him while you're getting to know him since birds tend to prefer slower movements over quick moments. Congratulations on your new Quaker! :)

Welcome! He's really cute! It's best to try to keep things the same for him as he settles in- if you can. Same type of food. Same bedtime. Covered or not covered, etc. Then you can start making the changes you want as he gets more comfortable.
