Hello Everyone,
we are new owners of a 4 month old Severe Mini Macaw and she is just beautiful.
we have a a question we are still hand feeding her but three days ago she continues from the time we uncover her cage until she goes to sleep making a squawking noice, is this normal it’s every few seconds. We pick her up and love on her but she continues to make that sound.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Does she bob her head or do her wings twitch/flit when she makes the noise?

Q-- is she trying to talk? Hopefully you talk to her when you pick her up to cuddle...

How long have you had her? She may be having some separation anxiety. Try to get her in a solid routine so she knows what to expect from one minute to the next and once she feels safe she should relax and not be so scared.

If it continues, I would be inclined to take her in to your avian vet. Could be normal baby stuff, but it might be a sign that something is bothering her.

You mentioned hand-feeding. What temperature is the formula? How do you prepare and heat it? How much and how often do you feed?

Thank you everyone for the replies. We took her to see the doctor and yes she is just going through her baby phase. She is just an awesome baby.

Generally when they make that pitiful half squawking noise and flip their wings - they are hungry (or think they are). When this happens it is best to feed them. That is the classic baby "I'm hungry" signal and even my 36 yo GW female (who is ill) will do that now and then.

Are you trying to wean her right now?

My Jericho was making his repeated anxious squawking noises until I agreed to write and mention that repeated anxious squawking noises will eventually need to be observed and processed, but often ignored so they aren't reinforced, though there's time for that shift after successful weaning.

Welcome to the forum! I'm looking forward to seeing your little one grow.
