Hello, Ive been researching, reading, and dreaming about birds. Me and my husband are seriously thinking about getting our first bird. I have 2 cats,(yes I know this will take ALOT of supervision and training) a 7 year old and a 12 year old (both humans lol!!!) We both work full time. From what I've gathered, an Amazon would be a good one to get. We'd like to get a larger bird that can talk, and can do Ok while we are at work. I figured an Amazon fits. If anyone has any advice on anything please share.

Welcome to the Avenue.

I commend you on doing research on which bird would fit your lifestyle. We've never been owned by a 'zon, so I really can't comment much about them...I will say that the cats will present a mighty safety challenge. (as you already know ;))
It´s ok to say you would like that, but just remember, not all birds talk.
...very true...

Aaww, you sound like your going to be a great family for your bird!! You seem very committed to making sure you are all ready.

I have four cats and a gcc and it's doable to train cats not to stalk your bird. Obviously can never be left unsupervised. Maybe this is an unpopular opinion, I don't know, but I find the mouse reliable way to train cats not to stalk a small pet (and by stalk I mean obsessively stare, creep closer while staring, hunker down like they may pounce) is create an unpleasant noise whenever they do these things. Like a can of pennies. I had three 2 month old kittens that we had to teach and it worked great. Now the only time they even pay any attention to the bird at all is when she flies and I just watch closely too see where she lands, make sure all the cats are calmly staying where they are. And we also have a cat free room that we hang out in if I want to read or do things that would not let me pay attention as closely.

Amazon are great talkers and have a "unique" scent, may be an acquired taste lol. Would definitely do your research especially with children as they can sometimes be crazy, bi-polar. My dad's YNA liked to chase our little dog around back in the day.
