Hello! I currently own two cockatiels. Bébé was my first, who just turned four. She came from a shizzty bird store but at least seemed to be parent raised and grew up with other tiels. She has always been very timid but in time became a very sweet and curious tiel. However because of her timidness she would never interact with any toys unless I was also directly playing with them, and she took to plucking despite hours of daily attention. I realized that I could not provide her all of the attention she needed, and started looking for a cockatiel needing a new home.

I found someone with a 2 y/o cockatiel named Coco, that they got for their son who later lost interest. She was extremely sweet and affectionate the first two weeks I had her, on day one of coming home she was sitting on my shoulder pressing her head against my face. Whenever anyone walked into the room she would fly to their head, and I even got her started on recall training by having her fly back and forth between me and my family members.

Took her to the vet to get tests done (gram stain & chlamydia), all came back well except she had a little bit of excessive gram neg bacteria which she is being treated for. I believe she was fed mostly a seed diet, and for the first week she would only eat millet, but then quickly took to pellet. She took to pellets around the same time we got back from the vet.

First day or two after vet she seemed fine, but suddenly started acting very defensive. She didn’t fly to me anymore, she got even worse with hand aggression, she hardly wanted to leave her cage. She wanted people to be around her, just not interacting with her. Eventually it was time to introduce her to Bébé. They call towards eachother excitedly, and when both in cages seem very desperate to get to eachother. But once they are actually out by eachother Coco gets very defensive again. Bébé has tried to approach her but she gets very aggro about it (Bébé respects Coco’s boundaries and backs off). She will approach Bébé and seems curious but always keeps a distance.

To some extent I was expecting that her introduction to Bébé would take time, since she came from a single bird home and I believe was hand raised. What’s more confusing to me is her aggression that is also aimed at me and my family after she had been so sweet.

I do understand that the process of moving to a new home can just generally be stressful and cause a lot of emotions. I just want to make sure I am doing the most I can to make it go well, and that I’m not making any mistakes. Any tips would be incredibly appreciated:)

How long have you had her? I help with a rescue and we refer people to this chart when it comes to a new bird:

It's really easy to have a loss if trust or some stress after vet visit.

Extra love and treats and sweet talking. No putting them in the position that a bite is all you listen to. Respect their space read body language. And time , sitting and talking to them , heck o lot of bribes . Should earn you back into good graces

Thanks for the welcome!

The chart is definitely helpful. At the time I posted it would’ve been around the 1 month mark, and she probably saw the vet around the 3 week mark, right when the issues started. I do now think it is the undoing of years of never being allowed to have boundaries in the prior home, and now she is trying to figure out where her comfort level is, now that me and my other tiel do respect her boundaries. There has not been any bites in the past week, she has stepped it back to vocalizing her discomfort and that is enough for me and my other tiel to back off. I think she is definitely starting to warm up again, today for the first time in a while she flew to me when I had my other tiel on my shoulder, and hung out for a few minutes. I have high hopes that she’ll return to her sweet self eventually :)

I think birds definitely have an initial honeymoon period in a new home. My cockatoo was an angel when we first got him. A complete angel. Then he became a terror. And now he is a sweet mischievous monkey which is his true personality. Lol.
