I got a baby (2 month old) rainbow lorikeet from a breeder 1 year ago.
Last November she spend an entire Sunday sleeping. I took her to an emergency vet that night where they kept her for overnight observation and provided heat (couldnt do anything since they specialized in cats and dogs).
Took her to a bird specialist the next day. They kept her for a few days then discharged her. We had to give her antibiotics for the next 10 days at home. Vet asked us to bring her back in a few weeks so they check for pbfd as the vet thought she had an enlarged liver.
When we brought her home she was always active and happy. I didnt take her back to the vet afterwards thinking she was healthy.
Last Sunday she played the entire morning with me then became inactive. Wouldnt eat much and was sleeping. I provided her with heat and decided to take her to the specialist the next day (Monday).
Took her to a different vet (closer to home, bird specialist). They said they will take blood, take an xray, run tests while we take her home and wait for the results.
They took her for the xray. Could hear her protest. The vet comes running out and asks us (me and wife) if we want to hold her because she is dying. We held her and she died in our hands.
Vet says she had a heart attack. Vet says she had pbfd and that the previous vet visit would have been another mini heart attack. I asked to confirm it since I have another bird at home. He took my bird from me but came back saying he cant take blood as there is no blood pressure so he cant test for pbfd.
I am devasted. She was my best friend. Did the vet do something? Do birds have sudden heart attacks when one moment she is protesting being handled by strangers for the xray?
Been 2 days, I havent eaten since, havent been to work. I keep going through what happened again and again and again. Is thr Vet making sense? Is that even possible?
*seems I cant post without a prefix. This is neither urgent nor a 911 request. Please move if in the wrong section.
