My cockatiel is has labored breathing for about a week & in last day or 2 now has loss of appetite. I live on less than 1,000$ a month & now w/ government shut down my food assistance is on hold so I can not afford a bet & this is really upsetting & heartbreaking for me cuz I've had my bird for 20-22 yrs now so he's family!!! How can I treat him w/ out taking him to a vet plz help!!!!!!

He needs to see a vet. Have you looked into Credit Care. It's a credit card that will cover vet bills and typically there's no interest if you pay within a certain period of time. I hope he will be ok.

You could also look into charities that help with vet bills. We have onr in Ontario called Farley Foundation | Help Ontario Pets Access Vet Care Hopefully you could find one like it in your state. I'm so sorry you and your bird are going through this

Without knowing what's wrong with him it makes it really hard to treat. Respiratory infection, heart problems, toxic airborne exposure, internal trauma are all some of the possibilities and the course of action will be different for each one.
