Looks like a Road Island Red. Yes, I know they are darling chickens and very sweet. We had about a dozen when we lived in the midwest. Had a little farm. The Reds are very loving and cute as heck. Sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry for your loss Susan. 
I've never owned chickens but one of our landladies (growing up in Argentina) had them. While most non-fowl people don't give chickens much credit other than laying eggs and roosters for crowing at dawn, our landlady's rooster & chickens were also watch fowl. I'd gone over to talk to one of the landlady's daughters (both close to my mid teen age) and was chased off the property - not by the boxers but by the rooster and hens. I learned the hard way not to mess with the hen!
