Before making description, what I want to tell you is that my mother tongue is not English, which would probably make my expressions sometimes confusing. If such circumstances happen, you can point what seems confusing out,and I'll try to repeat it in another way so that it could be understood.

For some reasons I went out of home for about a month, during which my budgie is taken care of by my family. When I came back,I found that his leg was limping a little(Picture 1,shot on June 10th),I thought it was due to lack of calcium(so I gave him Water-soluble calcium and Cuttlebones),but things didn't get better, instead worse one week later(just as picture 2,shot on June 16th),his foot curled up.

Then I went to the vet's.The vet made an X-ray(pic 5 and 6,shot on June 17th) and told me that his bone and joint was fine. She told me it might be caused by virus or neural problems and gave me some medicine. But I still hadn't seen him getting better generally, sometimes he appears better, but most of the time worse.BTW,she told me his gonad is bigger than common ones, and his liver is also a little over-sized.Maybe certain too big organ(s) stressed his neural, causing his left leg limping.

BTW,by checking the monitor in my home,I assumed this started about one week before my returing, around June 3rd

The third pic was shot on June 21st and the 4th was taken on June 22nd.To my depression,it seemed that not only his foot is limping, but also he couldn't feel his left foot, maybe in addition to it a part of his left body. Also he now spends more time in the feeder but doesn't eat more ,maybe even less than usual.

He's got a partner in the same cage but the other one doesn't appear any unsual behavior. So I guess this might not be a virus-related problem.

I went to the vet again trying to make some examinations but he was too thin, only 27g,which would be dangerous to receive anaesthesia and phlebotomy. Now I sometimes feed him formula, trying to keep and even raise his weight.

I don't think he can feel his left foot...I was too optimistic maybe.

@birdie_76 @Kassiani isn't able to post here but asked me to share their reply and past thread to help.

"But yes, Jujube was favoring one of his legs and it turned out he had enormous gonads that showed up on the x-rays. He recommended that I extend their dark hours to about 14 to 16 for 6 weeks. That helped quite a bit. Now I am constantly mixing up their cage location at night, toys in their cage, etc. Just anything to keep them on their toes."

I was going to say that left leg pain can be related to reproductive pain , or internal organ pain like kidney. Then I saw that you mentioned, gonad enlargement. While I'm not skilled enough to read radiograph. I take your vets word for it. Unfortunately, budgies are prone to reproductive cancer , and cancer in general. I just lost a budgie that had testicular cancer. :( tho your guys cere is still blue a d has t changed to brown like my guy did . But is still possible. Especially as Budgies reach five years an older .
My veterinarian also did not recommend intervention

You are a great parent , kudos to you for reaching out to veterinarian, and having x-ray done. You clearly love your guy and are doing your best for him

Hello @birdie_76, I've been given permission to post on your thread. My male budgie, Jujube, displayed lameness, panting, and he was holding his wings away from his body and quivering. He was very hormonal. It sounds as though your boy is going through the same thing right now.

My vet told me that the idea is to trick the bird's brain into thinking it is *not* mating season. Nights are typically longer. So, I had to put my budgies to bed at around 5 p.m. and wake them up around 7:30 a.m. I put them in a room by themselves, covered the cage, made sure the windows were covered. My vet said the room needed to be completely dark, no light at all. After doing this for about 6 to 8 weeks, my Jujube was much better.

Do you have a room or part of the house where you can keep your boy quiet and covered and in the dark for 14 hours overnight?
