My alexandrine parrot is facing severe feather loss and its diet is usually of pellets, lentils and fruits. He is quite sleepy these days and he has a male bird companion with him.But still I think he is not happy and sleeps alot these days.I need some suggestions since when I took him in hand he starts mating behaviour I don' know what to do is he need of female partner and what could be reason of his feather loss.

Can you post a picture of your cage set up this picture makes his cage look small and bare I don’t see perches or toys I really hope that doesn’t sound rude it’s really not meant to be

have you taken him to see a vet ? My lovebird plucked his back and legs my vet said it was due to stress of other lovebirds how do your two birds get along ? Are they bonded ? If they aren’t and there’s no health issues (if taken to vets for check up ) then maybe the other male is stressing him out maybe ?

it could also be hormones I’ve found when any of mine are hormonal upping the foraging adding more foraging toys or ideas help even hiding food in paper for them to rip up or paper over a bowl shredded paper with food seeds or pellets or treats hidden inside

toys they can actually engage with balsa sola wood thin pine mahogany pods sea grass mat brass wood

I would personally recommend taking him to vets for a check up

carefully watch his and his cage mates behaviour have two food and water bowls as they could be bonded but ones food bully ?

if that’s your cage maybe add some more enrichment in there to keep him busy

I wouldn’t be adding a female or other bird until you have him vet checked

Hello and welcome.

Emma did a great job of covering everything.

Being sleeping equals a health issue most of the time . Many times see the avian veterinarian and having them prescribe a round of antibiotics is all that's needed to get them well .

On food , are they eating the pellets ? Often a new bird has trouble switching to a new diet when they change homes . I like to take things slow . Letting them have the food they had in previous home , and also offering all the food I want them to eat. After a couple of weeks if they are healthy , I start trying to offer less of the the food I don't want. Watching to be sure they are eating my new health foods..I weigh the bird and watch the poop to help me determine they are eating enough. You don't want more than a 3% weight drop during food transition.

Vegetable should be offered as well , it can take time for the bird to recognize new foods , so expect waste but keep offering. As well as plenty of the goods they do eat . Many parrots enjoy romaine lettuce, bell pepper, and other peppers , carrots , squash , peas , green beans, a little fresh corn . You can offer a little boiled egg a few times a week . Some nuts , like walnuts, pine nuts , pistachios .

Birds should not be left in full sun , they need to be able to move out of the sun into shade .

Sometimes sharing a cage , can cause one bird stress , especially if the cage is in the smaller side, like Emma mentioned. Or one bird may est the good and block access to the other . You don't have to see fighting for this to be happening.

This thread is on going , and shares many healthy things people offer their parrots. Can be a source fur hood ideas. I go through it to look for ideas for my parrots
