Hi Guys,

Moochie is 5 years old and is molting and has been for 5 to 6 months now.

She has lost her leg feathers and having a hard time with the molt.

She screams when they are bothering her and will wake up in the middle
of the night when they do bother her.

She has not molted like this before and was wondering if anyone else has
had this happen.

Moochie is free flight and gets a variety of food and seeds and even Herb Salad.

Please help.
Thanks

Zara

When you say that she is a "free flight" bird, do you mean that she flies outside without a harness? If so, she may have been bitten by some sort of parasite such as a tick. Does she have good use of that leg and foot? Could she have injured her leg? That sounds very abnormal for even a heavy molt.

Im assuming from your profile pic that moochie is a caique ( great name)

I have 8 caiques, average age about 7, so I have some experience here

Caiques moult from the head down ( starting their moult with head feathers)

Naturally their head is the only part of their body they cant reach with a beak to break those feather shafts open

Thats what friends are for

SO the leg feather issue bothers me. Mine never LOSE their leg feathers. The feathers get replaced in a natural way over time

No bald patches

I would look for another cause, feather plucking due to irritation of some sort?
